I never would have guessed 5-10 years ago that our roster would only have one player from the state of California and someone who might not be a starter even if she stays at Texas all four years. It's not like all our assistant coaches didn't grow up in southern California and cultivated lots of coaching connections. The days of Ashley Engle, Kiley Hall, Alyson Jennings, Juliann Faucette, Sha'Dare McNeal, Yaazie Bedart-Ghani, Lexi Sun, etc. seem so long ago. Is the state California just not producing elite players like in the past? Are they staying out West, or heading to the B1G? Are they focusing on Beach instead of indoor? I'm definitely content that Texas is spreading its reach even further east. Getting players from the Carolina's is definitely new recruiting territory for Texas. Getting a recruit like Harvey from Utah seems crazy, but it confirms we still have a recruiting presence out West; just not as much as in the past. It is an interesting trend. While there’s involvement with players from california it’s true we haven’t had many actual commits. Although you could argue Ames is a partial Cali recruit since she was living there and playing for Mizuno Long Beach just three years ago. We were also in on Demaria, Blackshear, and Ogbechie in 2025, and for varying reasons they ended up elsewhere.

Do we think Anderson is coming to us or somewhere else ? I heard that Nebraska is about to get busy. But I feel like she’s a lock since she lives in Austin lol

Getting a recruit like Harvey from Utah seems crazy, but it confirms we still have a recruiting presence out West; just not as much as in the past. To me the more interesting trend is how few Texans we were grabbing out of high school there for a couple of years. In Halter’s class we had a big class and none of them were from Texas. None of them were from California, either, but that doesn’t seem quite as surprising, even with the talent in that state and the coaches connections there. Now our portai classes have been filled with Texans, from Skinner to Barnes to Carlson to Rutherford. We did bring in Bergmark from California, both as in the school and the state. Maybe she counts twice, then? Fleck was from California. But 2024 high school class had Emmerick. 2025 was full of Texans. And now it looks like Henderson is coming our way. The roster is suddenly going to be full of Texans again. One of the big things to me is if they get the out of state players to come to a camp. If the coaching staff decides they want them, Texas just seems like a tough place to pass up for indoor volleyball. We don’t seem to be losing many recruiting battles to anyone other than Nebraska.

She’s the #1 OH by a couple of services, although I’ve seen a couple of posters on here disagree with that assessment. I think everyone feels like she’s one of the top OH’s in her class. She’s out of Dripping Springs, right outside of Austin.

We are getting more in state players because it’s easier to do NIL deals due to cheaper in-state fees etc

For a couple of years we didn’t even seem to go after the top talent in the state. I don’t think Ames, Spears, and Henderson are because of cheaper in state fees for NIL.

I suspect in his earlier years, Elliott likely relied heavily on his West Coast connections when he looked out of state. I feel certain today his connections, and his staff's, are much more widespread. Likely this also illustrates the growth of volleyball in other parts of the country and development of elite players in those areas.

Ummm for sure. I'm not even a Texas fan and I can tell you that the instate players that Texas has wanted, Texas has made offers to, and have rarely lost out on, for at least the last 15 years.

It helps to win and it also helps to have the state with the top talent!

Of the few I can think of that JE publicly stated he wanted and lost, 2 returned, and one had a more than incredible career at Kansas. Even before NIL Texas was getting the girls they wanted.
