Keep hearing how this virus really only effects individuals with a low immune system. Fair to assume WVB athletes and coaches/staff have above average immune systems??? Everyone working out on their respective campus should have been tested first. It's simple with results in less than 24 hours. Guessing each BWC team has accomplished this so far. This should not wait to the starting day of fall practice,...just in case! - CA reports 7409 fatalities w/covid, and zero deaths w/covid for the 0-17 age group. 18-34: 88 fatalities w/covid; 35-49: 396; 50-59: 717; 60-64: 554; 65+: 5,654.
~ 76.3% have been in the 65+ age group.
~ 57% of CA fatalities have been male.
- For CA I haven't found a stat for how many fatalities had pre-existing conditions, but in Hawai'i it's reported that ~ 66.7% of fatalities had pre-existing conditions that put them at high risk.
For Hawai'i as of 7/18/2020: the Hawai'i Dept. of Health does not provide a table of fatalities w/covid by age group to the public (why? you would be right to ask). However since they have had so few, they've provided detail to the local news outlets for each fatality as it occurred. Here's the breakdown:
- 1,354 total cases.
- 140 total hospitalizations, only one of those in the 19 years old and under group.
- 24 total fatalities w/covid: - Zero deaths w/covid for the 0-39 age group. - 1 fatality reported in the 40-59 age group. - 1 reported in the 50+ age group. - 22 reported as 65+, or 'elderly' or 'older'. This group accounts for ~ 96.7% of Hawai'i covid fatalities.
~ 66.7% of HI fatalities have been reported to be male. ~ 66.7% of HI fatalities have been reported to have pre-existing conditions that put them at higher risk.
The bottom line: for healthy kids high school and younger, the risk of fatality w/covid appears very low, close to zero. For this group, their biggest public health risk may result from the shutdown of schools (a policy protecting at-risk adults in the schools). For healthy college age adults, the risk appears roughly that of severe flu. [The public health agencies in CA and HI are skewing the college age group stat to be older, including the typical college age of 18-24 in with adults that are one to two decades older. Why? Good question.] For the typical healthy coaching/teaching age group of 35 - 64, there is a possible higher risk than severe flu, but if they have pre-existing medical conditions, they become higher risk. The highest risk group by far is in the 65+ group, in particular those in this group w/pre-existing medical conditions/male, they are at the most risk of fatality w/covid.
Thanks for the valuable info!!! Pretty much what I've heard over the past 3-4 weeks. Let's get the schools opening on time,...taking all the proper precautions. This lock down mentality is killing the social fabric of our country.

This lock down mentality is killing the social fabric of our country. Are you proposing 100% boarding schools, with the kids locked in and unable to leave for weeks, in a Lord of the Flies situation with no teachers or staff? If not, and you are instead proposing kids go to school to pass around Covid, give it to the teachers and staff and then bring it home nightly to their parents and grandparents, then I don't share your optimism.

Just an admission of the facts would be a good start toward getting to a rational policy.
Statistically, K-12 are more at risk from the flu than covid. So, shutdown of their schools is a policy to protect at risk adult staff. Since lockdown of schools hurts kids education, socialization, intellectual and physical development, and for many kids at the margins it hurts their safety and nutrition, than the public health policy of school lockdown is skewed heavily to protecting the adults.
Hawai'i is choosing to open their schools K-12 on August 4th. They are trying three different models of operation, and leaving the schools to choose which they can best employ. One is to open the school to as many students as it will allow while maintaining social distancing in classrooms and other gatherings, another is a model to allow some or many students and their families to engage in a program of distance learning from home, and another is a hybrid model where students go to school part of the week, and stay home and distance learn part of the week. For the K-3 grades they are emphasizing getting as many of them to school as possible. For the older students, it's likely more of them will be able to choose a distance learning model.

Let's give parents of K-12 the option of either sending their kids to school or keeping them home,...hopefully on a learning online scenario. Remember many parents work all day and schools act as a sort of baby sitter, too.
My guess the students in grades K-8 will attend more than grades 9-12.
Colleges students should also be given the option to attend class or work online. My guess 50% of college students will attend their classes.

Hawai'i students lost about 40+ days of school in the spring session due to school shutdowns. The schools attempted to employ distance learning, and worked with many students over the summer to catch them up to where they should be. Both teachers and parents reported in most cases that distance learning wasn't working well. Many Students were skipping, overall interest in learning (and teaching) waned. Families were polled by the Hawai'i DOE, and over 80% of student's families wanted at least some in person schooling contact, over a pure distance learning situation.
To open up the schools Hawai'i is investing in computer devices for students to use at home, adding greatly to their nursing staffs, and dedicating about the first two weeks of school to teaching everyone just how to conduct themselves in the new environment. Students, families, and educators alike. The expectation is that there will be plenty of issues to work on, and the Governor is asking for everyone to support the effort. It requires everyone be flexible every day, and everyone be ready to make some changes on the fly, and families, employers, and the whole community to accept their role in making things work as well as they can.

I had the recent amiable privilege to be tested for Covid.
Not particularly pleasant nor is it awful. Developing a test that can be self administered with results almost immediate is another key toward resolving this situation.

Some of the tests discussed are self-administered, some provide results in one hour or much less, some test for the virus, some test for the common antibody. Accuracy isn't great for some, but quick, cheap, and available has a beauty all its own. Some or all could be part of the answer to bringing back travel, school, businesses, and sports. Hopefully, by this fall.

Thanks noblesol. This TBT approach is exactly what VB teams need to implement before boarding a flight anywhere.

CAL POLY Athletics posted some personal insight from Chen Abramovich. Ms. Abramovich, like Kate Jordan, transferred into CAL POLY from a P5 school. Ms. Abramovich likened San Luis Obispo, CA to her native homeland,...Kfar Saba, Isreal. Where at the age of 18 served her country's two years of obligatory military service before arriving in the USA to pursue her collegiate career. gopoly.com/news/2020/7/22/general-mustang-spotlight-alimamy-koroma-and-chen-abramovich.aspx

More delays,...and, more delays!
The Big West Conference decision to push WVB start into January 2021 doesn't surprise.
Butter-nut or whatever the new Commissioner's name obviously wants to be as cautious as possible. Can't blame him.
At least we are seeing better/easier/faster results from the test procedure.
Now if the Country, (the World) can solve the vaccine dilemma we can move forward.

jake are you worried seniors Dvoracek and Mercer may never play another set for Cal Poly indoor volleyball again? Admittedly I love watching Maia Dvoracek play. Really think she can literally captivate an audience. And that would be a shame to miss for all collegiate WVB fans. Madilyn Mercer has come a long way from her freshman days at CAL POLY. I expect huge things from her in her senior year,...as well!

Has the 11 school conference resolved postseason play with the NCAA? Or has the Big West Conference, its new Commish and the Board of Directors resigned themselves to sitting it out this season? Just brilliant!!!

Just brilliant!!! Define "resolved postseason play"? Unless the proposed fall season is suddenly abandoned, the NCAA tournament is scheduled for the fall. The BW will not be participating. So yes, that's been resolved.
