I don't know if I'd go that far. Sometimes, championship teams have a close call early on. This happens a lot in men's basketball (e.g. UCLA/Missouri in 1995, among many others). It's less common in volleyball (the closest I could find was 11th-seeded Stanford needing five sets to beat Florida in the second round in 2004 before going on to win the title), but it's something that I think will become more common as parity continues to grow. As for this Texas team, sure they almost lost, but they didn't actually lose, and they still have the most dangerous offense in the country. Time will tell, but they may be better for this match.

What happens In one round has zero impact on the next. I mean, I don't know if that's completely true. If one team has a grueling 5-set match and has to play another match the next day against a team that had an easy sweep, that could affect them. And of course, any injuries that happen could have an enormous impact. I agree that in general, just because a team struggles in one match, that doesn't necessarily mean they'll continue to struggle. But I'm not a fan of blanket statements.

The lessons from being down In that pressure cooker gym; that experience individually and as a group will pay out. The team had to take a difficult critical look in the mirror at the end of game three and find a way out (Khat May have held up that mirror). Their ability to make difficult changes - subbing out the starting libero in game 4 when everything is on the line, as opposed to playing it safe - was brave to say the least. Under the gun they found a way to adapt to a much faster UCSB offense. It was amazing.

takeaways from the match. Man I really enjoyed watching UCSB's offense and how quick they moved the ball. They were a very scrappy team and Ruddins seeemed to get anything she wanted at times! Congrats to them on a very successful season and pushing Texas to 5 in their home gym. For Texas, I was very happy to see Rounsanville come in and steady up the defense. She didnt have a ton of digs but it seemed she was just a steady presence in there when the team needed it. I forgot how young we were until Paul mentioned it, but man this team has a lot of confidence. Fields has looked phenomenal and Eggleston is just next level. We will need to figure out our serving issues before Louisville comes to town but I like that we had such a difficult match and pulled through!

ESPN has a brief post on the match that includes some quotes from Khat Bell and what she was thinking and saying.
"I couldn't sit there any longer; it was hard to watch them kind of crumble under the pressure," said Bell, who now plays volleyball professionally. "I said, 'If I was out there on the court, what would I say to them?'"
"When things are going tough, pull it out, look to each other, take care of each other. You've got to find a way."

I hope Ruddins plans to play pro. She's just too good.

Watch the replay. She's clearly screaming, Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor. Hell no!

Bell saved the day.............. Are you saying Texas was...saved by the Bell? (I normally don't care for puns that much, but I couldn't help myself--if volleyball was a more popular sport, I'm confident that "Saved by the Bell!" would be a headline appearing in newspapers and websites across the country).

I knew UCSB would be able to stress Texas with its ball control and defensive game but I didn’t think they would take Texas to the limit. Santa Barbara really had a successful season. To play that well against Texas at Gregory in an NCAA match is a great way to go down. If you’re not going to win a championship, may as well go down with guns blazing. Really going to miss seeing Lindsey Ruddins play. That young woman is such a great volleyball talent.
Congrats to Texas for battling through the storm. And kudos to the Longhorn fans for sticking with their team. Even when the going was rough, you were there supporting your team.

What exactly was exposed. UCSB was in system most of the match and played lights out. Texas has a bad serving night and bad serve receive. Anything else you would like to add?
