Lots of good stuff in the 22.29 minute interview with Ali Bastianelli. For those high school volleyball recruits that have any inkling at all that they might want to play professionally, choose a college that has coaches who actually played professionally overseas. Ali talks about how fortunate she was playing for Illinois where all of her coaches had played pro overseas. Illinois coaches had/have connections to overseas pro leagues and agents who represent players as they pursue contracts with pro teams. Ali is so well-spoken, and smart. I can remember posting a short interview she did when she was in high school. She was very poised then, as well.

Eli is our newest coach, coaching passers and defenders. He fills the vacancy left by Alfee Reft when Alfee was hired as associate head coach at University of San Diego in February. Some VT posters familiar with Eli’s coaching called this a great hire and that conversation can be found earlier in this thread. Here are a couple links with content about Eli: Illini VB Press Release

It's been a while since I've visited here, but this comment caught my eye. The VT forum has many really knowledgeable VB observers, but also too many who seem obsessed with prior rankings or well-known reputations of both players and coaches. I see this selection of Eli as an under-the-radar but potentially very wise and long-term successful move by the Illinois coaching team. It's definitely a thinking person's program-building move. And I'm not just talking about Eli's Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology...from Wisconsin. It's culture fit. Complementary skills fit. Work ethic. Quiet competence. Exactly the kind of choice I would expect from a coaching team made up of former National Team and pro ranks. Too early to tell how it will play out, expecially with the bizarre uncertainty of "The Season From COVID Hell." But will be really interesting to follow and see how it plays out in the coming years.
