Looking at the stats, I just don't get how that was so damn close. 16 SE Yeah -- but Cincinnati made up for that with 29 hitting errors compared to just 8 for Penn State. Of course, about half of those errors are coming directly from PSU's blocks, but still, even if you take away the blocks, PSU's combined hitting+serving errors are about even to Cincinnati's

Penn State hit .445 and outblocked Cincinnati 15-1 and STILL was in a battle late in the 5th set? That's... incredible. Especially when you consider Penn State only has to really worry about 2 hitters, one of which is like 5'8?
Because 2 sets were blowouts.
And because PSU's normally dependable servers and passers didn't play well for 3 sets.

Jordan Thompson finished the season with an average of 6.38 kills/set, breaking her own 25-point rally scoring record of 6.27 that she set last season. Hopefully, she wins National Player of the Year, and I can't wait to see more of her on the national team. She deserves it. I was definitely impressed with her all-around game, as we didn’t see her serve receive in the FIVB. I was surprised with how well she did back there.

Mallon is so much fun to watch She reminds me of Autumn Bailey from Michigan State. I hadn’t seen her play before. Very impressed!

Living in the upside down world it seems.
Last night may have been the best offensive and front line showing for PSU hitting at .445 and out blocking Cinci 15-1 game 1 .192 game 2 .500 game 3 .500 game 4 .565 game 5 .471
.....and our weakest performance from the backrow INCLUDING service line (certainly the first couple games) Kendall White only having 14 digs in a 5 gamer is unheared of!!!
I say all this with a smirk because the stats for the season prove how many times our backcourt have bailed out this team and I expect them to be outstanding again tonight as usual.
Bravo Cincinnati on a terrific showing and Jordan Thompson....best of luck in Tokyo!!
What exciting day of volleyball that was yesterday. On to Stanford! I think PSU has had some success in Regional Finals against Stanford if I remember correctly.

Jordan Thompson deserves NPOY. Indeed. At a different level to Pressley, whose game seems immature in comparison. It will be interesting to see, in two years, whether Thompson or Plummer is more valuable internationally... I'm guessing Thompson purely based on verticality and speed.

Was Thompson highly recruited? Coming from Minnesota you would think she would have ended up at Minny, Wisky or Nebraska.

^ if you search on her name, back in 2013-2014 on this site, you see people thought she was really good, and people were also wondering why she hadn't committed yet to Minnesota. One poster glibly said... "she's not going to Minnesota" without any explanation. Nobody ever answered that question back then.

Looks like Minnesota only signed two in her class: SSS and Taylor Morgan. So maybe they just didn't have a scholarship open for a pin. gophersports.com/news/2014/11/12/Gophers_Sign_Morgan_Seliger_Swenson_to_NLIs.aspx

Was Thompson highly recruited? Coming from Minnesota you would think she would have ended up at Minny, Wisky or Nebraska. There was a story on Thompson the other day that talked a bit about her recruiting. Apparently, she wasn't that confident in her abilities, so she took the first offer she got, which was from Syracuse after her sophomore season. But then she reopened her recruitment after a coaching change and committed to Cincinnati on the encouragement of close friend Jade Tingelhoff, who was her setter in both club and at Cincinnati. Thompson's mother is quoted in the story saying that she was telling her daughter than she could have played at a power like Texas or Nebraska (I'm not sure if these schools actually showed interest or were just examples), but Thompson wanted to go somewhere that she would get a lot of playing time all four years.
