You don't just recruit the player, you recruit the person as well. Sports isn't just stockpiling statistics on a roster. If Cook thinks he can make it work from a culture/personality perspective, then he'll obviously try to get her to Lincoln, but he's very protective over the locker room chemistry ever since 2007. That's not an indictment on Koerber, she has every right to her beliefs and may be a perfectly affable teammate, jbut it adds extra due diligence on Cook's part. The good thing is, he does seek his players' input on potential transfers, at least he has with the last few. What happened in 2007? !!

I think there are a lot of people who think Orr starting is a foregone conclusion (not saying you are)given her marvelous talent. It is however very difficult to unseat a setter who is among the most respected and trusted players by other players and staff in Nebraska history. Ask Cook or A teammate about how the feel about Hames? You don’t unseat that by just better talent. I have no reason to doubt Orr won’t garner that same level of trust and respect, but you ain’t doing that in 3 weeks in August. Orr has been with the team for quite a while. They know her by now, even if it's not nearly as well as they know Hames. I think it'll be a hell of a battle. If Orr can unseat an All-American, great. If not, we have an All-American returning at Setter. Win/Win Yup. If she’s way better I wouldnt hesitate to start Orr, ifs she’s a little better, I wouldn’t.

I’ve not seen or read what her politics are. She is a very avid trump supporter. Her posts on Instagram lately are very trump centric, a lot of "keep america great" type posts. Hmmm, that’d be tough, but what locker room would that fly in? I dont want to get political but it’s mind blowing to me a young woman would support someone with that history of contempt, and disrespect for women. Oh well.

Why did you leave Zuhn out of the possibility? home girl can’t hit on the right and the pins on the left are better + she’s recovering from an injury I'm still hopeful based on progress to date. But lots of competition this fall. These guess starting line ups not based on that.

She posted a photo with someone wearing a shirt saying "SOCIALism DISTANCING" and posted a photo with Don Jr other things like that. I don't think she would get along with the new recruits politically, but she just posted she's going to BYU. I think she will find more like minded people there, I believe BYU is a more conservative college

Where does opposite rank among positions of need for the Fall 2021 Huskers? Assuming no transfers (in or out), the current projected lineup might look something like this: S: Hames or Orr OH: Kubik and Krause MB: Caffey and Schwarzenbach RS: Batenhorst L/DS: Rodriguez, Knuckles and Akana This assumes they would DS for both Krause and Batenhorst. Whichever of the three don't win the libero position would slot into the two DS roles. Why did you leave Zuhn out of the possibility? Seeing her play, I think the likelihood she sees regular court time is slim. Her biggest asset is her size but at the end of the day, I don't think her blocking looked any better than Sweet who is significantly smaller. And her hitting technique was terrible. She is constantly completely straight up or falling back away from her hits which I think is why she has such a hard time getting on top of the ball and sails everything long. With the amount of competition coming in, it's going to be hard to fix all of that to the point where she is a regular starter.

Go back and watch the Zuhn performances again. Her blocking and ability to influence the hitter are obvious. Her hitting "problems" started when she faced the big experienced block of Ill. They forced her to hit over the top (which she could do and Jazz would not be able to) and they played their back row deep to cover tips which she had scored points off of against previous opponents. She tried line and Kuper was there to dig her. Coaches have trained her to swing hard. Her adjustment was to swing harder, and she started missing long. Last time that she played, she scored a couple of times with a shot over the block with less pace. It fell in front of the back line defenders. She is just learning to be a pin hitter against high level competition. Her falling back was almost always due to trying to hit iffy sets as hard as a good set. She surprised us all this year. She will be much better next year. I'm a huge Ally fan and believe that she will win the position, but Riley is going to be tough competition.

We don’t know who will return, we don’t know it this covid nonsense will still be interfering with the normalcy of life and we don’t know know who the coaching staff will be (it never seems to stay the same does it?). Maybe we should wait until these issues are clear before we start putting a line-up on the court. In addition we don’t know how healed those with injuries will be in August. No one knows. But I can tell you, based on my own ACL operations, and friends and teammates ACL recoveries, Orr will not be 100%, nor will she be physically able to be the setter she wants or needs to be by this fall. I would be shocked if she doesn’t redshirt. This would also be seem best going forward. But the biggest obstacle to Orr being the Nebraska setter next fall is the performance of Nicklin Hames-she’s really good, she’s a leader and unseating her could destroy the chemistry of the team. I don’t see Cook doing that. When Dani Busboom was replaced at setter, she could be seamlessly moved to Libero-that won’t happen now. Dealing with the L/DS positions is going to be tricky enough without adding an AA setter to the mix. Replacing Hames at setter with a kid coming off of ACL surgery could destroy many years of carefully built culture.
Does one person on this board know what stage of rehab and physical limits Orr is under today? Unless you have had this injury probably not.
Nicklin Hames will be the starting setter next fall. ..and every Nebraska fan should be happy. The bigger question for me is, how much better will Nebraska’s passing be next fall with Rodriquez as the libero.

This will be the shortest period between seasons and yet somehow it seems like it will be the longest wait haha.

I don’t agree with your assessment that Orr would not be able to play at full capacity in mid august. There is a range of recovery that she would be in. I’m not saying she will be, but athletes at the highest levels have definitely been back in the time frame she is looking at.

The first priority is passing. So, whatever lineup gives you that. I'm no expert. But, I agree. Passing. I know Coach Cook tries to be positive. He usually was saying we need to pass better. After the Texas Tech game I think he parted the curtain a little. He said That's what it looks like with good passing. The ball was passed to Hames on top of her so she was ready to set. And - 43 assists. I also think Nebraska does best when Hames is #3 or #4 in Digs. For Tech, she was #3, I think. When she is 1 or 2, it seems really hard to get going as well.

Why is this Fall of 2021 discussion still happening in the Spring thread?
