Texas needs to build a different type of team to get back over the hump. For the past several years, they have trotted out the same type of team (that emphasizes big hitters/jumpers), and then they end up losing in the tournament in the same way (serve/receive or other passing breakdown, plus some unforced errors: service, in the net, or other). You would think by now that the coaching staff would see how this has played out multiple times, and attract a different type of player to the team--players who are excellent individual and team defenders (aka who can pass). Players who can prevent you from getting into a serve-receive rut, or who can get you out of one when it occurs. It seems like they view a big outside or middle who can jump high and pound as that bright shiny object, and they can't help themselves but try to recruit all of that same type of player to the team. They put up a gaudy regular season record, earn a top 3 seed, lose in the tournament, and repeat. The 2020 class is different. It's more defense oriented as every recruit is an upgrade in some aspect defensively. Naomi cabello is is a bigger block which we desperately need out of a setter, nalani losia is just an amazing libero with a monster serve, Madison williams is a good 6 rotation player who can defend in the backcourt, riley Heinrich I have not seen any video on but im sure she is a good DS and melanie parra is the piece we have been needing. She will upgrade the backrow attack that we have been needing and she is a great passer and defensive player and has a tough serve that she barely commits errors with and she has a great volleyball IQ. So now that everyone is more experienced and mature Texas will really be dominant What makes you think Parra is a "great passer" or that she has a "tough serve"?

Because I have watched many videos on her and not just highlights I found many full matches and that was against pros and experienced players and believe me she is ALL THAT AND THEN SOME! She has great backcourt defense and her passes are on target about 85% of the time and her serve is not as hard as losia but it has power and great location

While we can all speculate on the starting lineup for 2020, it's definitely tough not knowing with certainty who for sure will be on the roster, and if everyone will be 100% healthy (like Madi Williams) come August. Even if Parra does sign her LOI soon, she could have responsibilities with her national team if Mexico qualifies for the Tokyo Olympics, right?
So, based on the players we do know for sure will be on the 2020 roster, I see us running a 5-1 offense, and if Cabello's enrolling in January helps her win the starting setter spot, this could be our most logical lineup (as we would only have one pin hitter playing in the back row, and might need Gabriel to help in the back row):
OH: Logan Eggleston -- plays all 6 rotations OH: Capri Davis -- plays 3 front-row rotations; DS Jhenna Gabriel subs in and serves (unless Riley Heinrich is up to the task) Setter: Naomi Cabello -- plays all 6 rotations, obviously MB: Brionne Butler -- plays 3 front-row rotations; Libero Sydney Petersen or Nalani Iosia subs in and serves MB: Asjia O'Neal -- plays 3 front-row rotations, and serves Opposite: Skylar Fields -- plays 3 front-row rotations; DS Sydney Petersen or Nalani Iosia subs in and serves
If Gabriel holds on to the starting Setter spot:
OH: Logan Eggleston -- plays all 6 rotations OH: Capri Davis -- plays 3 front-row rotations; DS Riley Heinrich subs in and serves) Setter: Jhenna Gabriel -- plays all 6 rotations, obviously; Molly Phillips could sub in for a bigger block when Jhenna is in front row, or maybe Naomi Cabello could MB: Brionne Butler -- plays 3 front-row rotations; Libero Sydney Petersen or Nalani Iosia subs in and serves MB: Asjia O'Neal -- plays 3 front-row rotations, and serves Opposite: Skylar Fields -- plays 3 front-row rotations; DS Sydney Petersen or Nalani Iosia subs in and serves

Because she plays 6 rotations successfully against the best teams in the world and passes well against the best serves in the world and gets aces against the best passers in the world, to name a few

Next years nc belongs to Texas or Wisconsin imo. Stanford, sadly, will most likely not win but who knows. They do have 4 top 10 freshman and another top 10 recruit coming in. Depending on how parra does, who I think is the most logical option rn to put in at OH, and if cabello isn’t another shook, Texas could be unstoppable. I'm not sold that it will be this coming year, although possible. But 2021, should definitely be the year.

What makes you think Parra is a "great passer" or that she has a "tough serve"? Because she plays 6 rotations successfully against the best teams in the world and passes well against the best serves in the world and gets aces against the best passers in the world, to name a few Does she pass well though? And are her 8 aces for Mexico a good measure of a consistently tough serve? And what are we basing this on? YouTube highlights or all 23 sets she has played against the best passers in the world? I'm just trying to figure out where this certainty is rooted and understand if anyone has actually bothered to watch every single touch she's had internationally (I have).

I for sure have watched every video and match there is involving parra. Full matches and all and she is a great passer and overall player. She could go to any school in the country next season and start wherever she goes but she chose Texas and Texas chose her which says alot. PARRA IS THE REAL DEAL and it's no question about it

So what are her international passing numbers? I'll wait and see what data these guys are basing their evaluations on before I share them. Do you have a personal problem with her or do you not want her to join the Texas team? I don't understand where the problem is because you seem as if you don't want her to join the team. Are you even a Texas fan? Or are you just here to hate on Texas? I don't care what anyone has to say parra is the future of Texas and she does it all so whatever vendetta you have against Texas or parra keep it to yourself

Chill out, he's just asking to see the same matches you are watching so he can make an informed observation.

I haven’t watched every touch, that’s a little far but you do you. I have watched matches she’s played in, and I can comfidently say that most of the OHs in the 2020 class wouldn’t do that well internationally. I also watched her play against the USA youth team this past summer, with all the USA players being either good ncaa freshman and a couple of good prep players. She played very well against that team which almost every player has shown they are good in the ncaa.
