Encouraging to see these assessments of two of the Hawks' 2024 recruits. We sure need more solid setting and back row play. Hoping Meitzler and Marquardt can help with that...immediately. Building the program! Like what coach is doing. Will take some time.

Taking a look at last season non-conference record 6-5. They are 7-4 this year with probably another win vs Cornell tomorrow to finish 8-4. Last year they lost in 4 to Iowa State. This year they go 5 and had a chance. So after losing Jones and Onabanjo from last years team, they are still showing improvement. I think there are 7 Big 10 matches they can win this year. That would be 15 wins. And a very nice step for the program. I get these points and agree with them. I do see many positives in the future for sure. What concerns me is from an immediate standpoint, as evidenced in this incredibly sloppy first set against Cornell (which we somehow pulled out 25-22 after being down for almost all of the set), there are times with what appears to be complacency/lack of effort, being out-hustled, repeatedly not adjusting to/going for tips, letting so many balls go that land way in, more inconsistent passing and to me, a lack of seeing the Hawks having fun on the court. Hoping to see more fire and fundamentals from the Hawks here the rest of this match. The B1G awaits and it sure will be hard to win 7 conference matches if there is not improvement quickly in these primarily controllable areas.

I’m watching on ESPN and the announcer is brutal—doesn’t sound like he knows volleyball. Wow. Hawks need to get in gear. Seem pretty indifferent so far.

This is the most unenthused, indifferent, disengaged coaching staff we’ve had since pre-Bond.

But the have shown the ability to improve the team over a season. I know the parents of a player and the players love the staff and the family atmosphere they are building

Iowa barely ekes out set #2, 27-25. Looked similar to set #1.

I'd like to know the hitting/kill % numbers for both setters. I would think they are drastically less with Mateo.

Cornell starts off bad with a rotation/lineup error (something, my TV’s on mute) to put them down 0-6. Iowa built a very comfortable 15-3 lead, 21-10 now. Hoping to close this one out clean!

Iowa wins set #3, 25-11. Let's get them back to Iowa City and preparing for a massive step up in competition. Things were better in set #3, but overall, that was generally pretty ugly.

But my response was in regard to who’s going to bring the fire and fun in matches. I don’t think it’s off base to say based on all the matches we’ve seen so far, based on the visible body language from the staff, the fire or fun in matches isn’t going to come from the coaches. And that’s completely fine if it works… is it working? Is it going to work in B1G play?

I know the team has improved and we are stronger at every pin position than we were last year. We will know for sure in 2 years. I think we all know that if we don’t get better passing and more accurate sets, the hitting will not make the difference it should. It is a process that will take a few years.

Hawk football scored 40. Was a fun game to be at.
It’s something how we can watch the same thing and describe it completely differently. As far as the coaches emotional engagement. I find it very good. Barnes is up and engaging with his team on almost every play. Engages with the bench too. The chemistry and interaction seem very positive and competitive. On the other side, in volleyball, I see most coaches sitting and very little engagement. Most of them in fact. And I’ve seen every type of emotional engagement win championships. In the end the talent is what matters imo. But I like the chemistry and energy Iowa displays.

I've got no problem with how the staff manages matches. In 3 of the 4 losses, the better team won in my opinion. I think the lack of fire or intensity is due to self confidence. Court coverage with 3 pins playing 6 rotations is not going to be great but might be their best option. We'll see how the new lineup looks in Big Ten play. First 7 matches are rough with at Illinois and at Indiana the best chances of being competitive. It would be nice to not start 0-7 or 1-6 & give them something to build off of but that might not be realistic.
