Sounds like a great guy! Well regarded in the professional circles. #GoHawks! From everything I've read so far, it sounds like he is much more well known for being a great guy than he is for leading a winning program. This initially sounded a little harsh even in my own head, but maybe that's what they're looking for at this point. The last two coaches have been let go under questionable situations (one violation and one supposed player complaint?). He sounds like a stand up guy that is beyond reproach and may be able to win some games on top of that.

The Barnes era has begun. Here's hoping this coach, Coach Barnes, has an era at Iowa. I believe he will. Go Hawks!

I think every program swings for the fences when it comes to coaching hires, but ultimately settle in with what’s attainable and comfortable. It seems to me that if the school wants to bring stability and trust back to an embattled situation, this may be a home run hire. Best of luck.

Does this hire change any of the Hawks in the portal minds about staying at Iowa?

I would add, specifically at those who call this hire mediocre or who lament that this is not the hire who can bring Iowa to a higher level, that this may very well have been the best candidate who applied or showed interest. Wishing for the next coming of Russ Rose or whomever you think is the golden child may be what is mediocre where Iowa is concerned. Now about Barnes, I've followed the AAC pretty closely the last few years and think he has some strengths that will work out well in the conference. My question would be does he know his weaknesses well enough to fill his staff with what he needs to complete the gaps?

Rebuilt 3 very bad programs. Lamar: won the conference championship in 2nd season. Baylor: Sweet 16 in 5th year. Many recruits including Pressley move program to Final Four. Tulane: 29 wins in 3rd season and NIVC finals run.
This theme likely got him the job. Along with the stability Iowa is looking for. Rooting for him and Iowa!

The AAC will miss Coach Barnes. He took Tulane to new heights. 🚀

The AAC will miss Coach Barnes. He took Tulane to new heights. 🚀 I would disagree. Pretty consistent success over six seasons but never made the NCAA tournament. They did under previous coach, maybe even twice but I'd have to research that fact to be sure. A good tenure under him but the heights weren't new.

Looking at the Tulane site the previous coach didn’t make NCAA’s. And had 5 wins in 2014 and 10 wins in 2015. Barnes took over in 2016 with same team and won 18.

The AD has let one player and her parents destroy the volleyball program from top to bottom. He went against the recommendation of the faculty review committee. Spill the beans -- what are you alluding to? DM's open.
