The Black & Gold scrimmage is today at noon. Super excited to see the new Xtreme Arena for the first time, and I get to take my family for free admission!

Observations from today’s match ~
Great to see Hansen back looking healthy
Addie looked like she will give Black a run
Ortega & Splitt ran 5-1’s for each side
Buzz played 6 row RS
Senior Middles we’re solid
Hinkle & Slagle will battle for the jersey, feels like an upgrade defensively from last season.
I think the 3 keys will be ~
Defensively we are better
Don’t think setters today could stop a B1G OH attack in FR
Outsides looked competitive
High on newcomers Hinkle & Adlee
Brown not dressed out

Love hearing that sounds like Hansen is looking healthy again! Given your high marks on Addie, sounds like will be competitive at the OH position, even with Brown out for whatever may be happening with her right now. Sure hope she is ok. Hansen, Schmidt, Black and VanderWeide provide some depth there that we sure missed last season. And to know all should be back in 2022 and we'll be adding Haley Melby to the mix...exciting about future at OH in Iowa City! Agree that we should be solid in the middle and defensively. Will be interesting to see how Coach Brown approaches things with our setters for sure. And as for CBuzz, would love for her to just have a killer year with so much more depth around her this season. GO HAWKS! |

I love to see this stat in the weekend match notes:
"Buzzerio recorded a career-high 28 kills against the Blue Devils, tied for 13th most in a single game in school history. The last Hawkeye to record at least 25 kills was her sister Meghan Buzzerio in 2019."

Couple of tough matches for the Hawks coming up this weekend. We sure cannot be accused of soft non-conference scheduling this year, can we? Wow!
Obviously need to find some stronger, consistent offensive support for CBuzz, especially at OH. Think there is real talent in the OH crew so hoping we see some breakthroughs there. And blocking was pretty solid against Duke but basically non-existent against Coastal Carolina. IMO, we are missing Rients' blocking presence a lot. Wouldn't be surprised if Coach Brown might explore 6-2 with Ortega and Splitt, which would create more opportunity to get Blythe back on the court but guess we will see.
Wish they could have pulled out that tight 5-setter against Duke. Would have sure had positive impact on confidence to start with that instead of a tough (and tiring) loss. And tight time turnaround to match #2 against a team who hadn't seen the court since the night before didn't help, either. Still think this team has potential for a solid fall season.

Thank goodness we put together 3 sets of solid play on Saturday.
Disappointed at our start, but the win against that team in Ames, has to give us a shot in the arm going to Colorado this weekend!
