Long Beach St.'s new shark mascot named "Elbee" (L+B get it.) So the days of cheering: Go Beach! Go 49ers! Go Dirtbags! should be over now right. The players and fans should now be yelling Go Sharks! LOL

LOL SMH ....IDk why they could not have just kept the name 49ers for the year the school was started. If they were so worried about Prospector Pete just make it Long Beach State. no other mascot name needed. Lifeguards were dragging sharks out of the water by their tail in Newport Beach the other day. You know there is going to be Merchandise with that Shark on it and make everyone even more confused. Not a good choice. They will probably hire Ballislife to dress as the mascot and he will fight everyone at the pyramid LOL

It was sad that the school administrators let a small but vocal group take control of the narrative and force a change that was not needed.

Is Elbee a meat eater who dines on seal for dinner or did that small vocal group create a woke shark that's a vegetarian? LOL

Schools are re-evaluating every penny they spend in every department right now. There’s a lot of context missing from this. Hopefully it’s nothing more than something that was briefly mentioned in a meeting or report. I was a fan of a school where something like this got blown way out of proportion when it wasn’t actually a realistic possibility.

You'll find supporters of cutting Athletics inside every school. Effective defenders if there are any, typically come from alumnus, student athletes, boosters, and local business.

UC Riverside is considering to cut its athletic department Or UCR can drop back down to D2 probably where they belong and be non D1 like UC Santa Cruz and UC Merced. Let's be honest, if the Big West were allowed to kick out a consistently under performing conference member, UC Riverside would have probably been kicked out years ago.

Truer words were never spoken!!! UCR is probably no where near being a school with an administration interested in supporting D1 athletics. I agree they should drop down to D2. Basically taking UCSD place playing in the CCAA. LBSU is another school with a president that is "worse than useless" when it comes to supporting athletics. The alumni of LBSU need to replace Jane before she completely kills athletics at that school. The mascot thing was just the beginning.

is UCR competitive in anything? Maybe they should consider dropping down--they don't seem fully committed to athletics at the D1 level at all.

Do you really believe that the alumni of CSULB can force the President of the University to step down? The Chancellor--of the 23 universities that comprise the California State University system--only has that power. Nobody in the administration--including Conoley--is listening to all the noise emanating from all of the fan blogs on social media.

I believe that the current president at LBSU, Conoley, has been okay for athletics. She has helped in some areas and hurt in others. Where she hurt LBSU the most was in academics tearing down a lot of what the past two presidents have done over the previous 20 years. She appears to be an ideologue and governs as such.
