Let's not make this a Hawaii thread. Back to UCI, they had a golden year Kekauoha's senior year in 2018. She had Koumelis, Akpakpa, DeSales as fellow seniors and Wolfe, Carter. But that team was hit with injuries big time. Felt that was UCI's money year. For next season, I'm not sure who they have coming in, but losing Marjama as huge. A healthy Carter is a great piece to build around, and Ofoegbu has a lot of potential, but really struggled in consistency last year. At times she was stellar, other times she look like a horse trying to find her legs. Other than those two, not sure who else UCI brings to the table. Its unfortunate that every year, some of the BWC's best players transfer out... I believe Loryn Carter graduated and is not returning for her fifth year. UCI will be very young and will not be terminal at either pin. They do have a Marjama type OH coming in named Marianna Bertolone who has a good arm. We will also see if Villamu will finally get to come back from her injuries and play a full season. Her luck has been terrible. I think Marjama’s freshman year success came from being around a supporting cast of seniors that other teams had to worry about. Those threats were mostly gone last year and she couldn’t quite fill the “go-to” player shoes in my opinion...best of luck to her though!

Bummer for UCI, for whatever reason their team has been riddled with injuries... might be another tough year for them.

During UCI's last coaching change they lost Big West 1st Teamer Cassidy Pickrell who transferred to Arizona State. But UCI was able to rebound from that big loss and make back to back NIVC appearances a few years later. I think UCI has the ability to rebound from the loss of Marjama in a short time.
Not to mention UCI Coach Hain has a good track record of picking up impactful transfers like Hayley DeSales from Washington State, Ali Koumelis from Portland, Luna Tsujimoto from Ohio St. and even Laura Butler from UNLV.
UCI is getting sophomore setter Caitlin Kikta a transfer from Rutgers after their head coaching change. Hopefully Kikta can continue that trend of impactful transfers coming to UCI.

LOL Great to see them recruiting out of state players.

A little confused! Why exactly did Marjama transfer (or leave)? She was probably the most dynamic player for the anteaters,...IMO. Who besides Kikta has UCI recruited for 2020? It seems the VB program needs more financial support from the athletic department to get over the hump.

Marjama probably transferred to get away from the corona virus in the SoCal area, not to mention all the International Chinese students at UCI. LOL UCI also recruited Kate Slack's teammate on Rage Volleyball Club by the name of OH/Opp Anna Bertolone who I think was a Senior Ace honorable mention.

bwf2, how is CSUF’s Preston a good young head coach? This past season’s co-conference coach of the year was a joke as CSUF did not even win a handful of conference matches. I guess going from 0 wins to 4 is coach of the year material. Her overall conference record at CSUF is absolutely horrible. Her record in 2019 4-12, 2018 0-16, 2017 1-15, 2016 1-15, and 2015 0-16. So in five years she has won 6 conference matches and she is a good young coach. Anywhere but CSUF she would have been fired but winning must not be a priority at the school. She probably is a great young lady and wants the best for her student athletes but as a volleyball headcoach she is not cutting the mustard.

You'll get no argument from me that the conference awards were a joke. In terms of COY, Coach Rob should've won outright given that UH won a competitive conference without one of their best players. If Poly had won it, Walters should have won it outright. It's pretty simple. But CSUF definitely improved and they've got a good foundational player in Julia Crawford and Coach Preston is one of the better coaches in the conference. But if you don't like Preston, that's cool. Rank the BW coaches, in your opinion, in order of best to worst.

Here are my Big West head coach rankings: 1. Stork (CSUN) 2. Ah Mow (Hawaii) 3. Conners (UC Davis) 4. Walters (Cal Poly) 5. Lantagne-Welch (UCSB) 6. Hain (UC Irvine) 7. Melo (Bakersfield) 8. Luyties (UCSD) 9. McKienzie-Fuerbringer (LBSU) 10. Preston (CSUF) 11. Patton (UCR)

Reading between the lines my guess is that beachgrad probably thinks hiring Long Beach St. alum Nicole Polster, formerly Nicole Vargas during her playing days, as her #1 assistant coach was the best thing Preston did to improve the team last season. Maybe beachgrad is miffed that you didn't give Polster credit for Fullerton's improvement. LOL

Not sure I have as much faith in Stork as you.

Trying to dig down further than that involves too many assumptions.
