The Hawai`i Warriors will host their ninth annual Outrigger Hotels Invitational this weekend. Penn State, Ball State, and Shanghai Oriental will be making the trip to the islands to compete in this tournament.
Shanghai is replacing UCLA for the first time in this tournament. This has been the first time since the tournament started that the Bruins won't be making an early trip to Hawai`i to compete in the invitational.
The tournament schedule goes as follows
Thursday, January 16 5:00pm Ball State vs. Shanghai Oriental 7:30pm Hawai`i vs. Penn State
Friday, January 17 5:00pm Shanghai Oriental vs. Penn State 7:30pm Hawai`i vs. Ball State
Saturday, January 18 5:00pm Penn State vs. Ball State 7:30pm Hawai`i vs. Shanghai Oriental

Also, according to Jim Leahey, the Championship banner should be ready by the tournament. Of course, there may be delays (come on, it's been over eight months, so who knows how much longer things can be set back). But to be optimistic, I'm counting on it being unveiled before the Penn St. match. I can't wait to see it! Go Warriors!

Yeah I really hope they do unveil the banner this weekend. And I hope it is bigger then the banners that they have for the Wahine Volleyball Championships because those banners are just too small.
Well at tonights basketball game, it looked like they had couple new banners hanging that they have to unveil, so maybe that is the national championship banner.
Getting back to the tournament, I think this weekend should bring it pretty good competition for our Warriors especially Shanghai Oriental who beat the Warriors couple months ago in China.

Not sure which newspaper I read this from, but I read that they are also going to unvail the new Wahine banners as well. I think the size will be 6x9.

Volleyball banner to be raised at Stan Sheriff on Thursday
Hawaii coach Mike Wilton waited 10 years for his first national title, so being patient for one more week doesn't seem so bad.
The Warriors' coach was told by university officials that Hawaii will be hoisting its 2002 NCAA championship banner during this week's ninth annual Outrigger Classic. Hawaii hoped to have the pennant dangling from the rafters of the Stan Sheriff Center for the season opener against Lewis last week, but the banner was in committee.
"Any day will do with the way things have been going," Wilton said. "I heard it would be here for the tournament some time."
A university official said that the pennant will be raised on Thursday at the Stan Sheriff Center when Hawaii opens the tournament against Penn State at 7 p.m.
The banner will be larger ( 6 feet by 9 feet) than the previous Rainbow Wahine national championship banners, which were 4-by-6. The pennant will be white with green trim. It has larger lettering, the NCAA logo and a small tapa design.
Also unfurling that night will be the redesigned Rainbow Wahine banners from 1979, 1982-83 and 1987.

Do they have runner up and final four banners in the works? I could be mistaken, but I don't remember seeing anything like that. I know a number of schools usually have banners for those occasions.

I do recall Mike Wilton requesting for banners for WAC Championships for both the men's basketball and the women's volleyball along with the final four(s) for the women's volleyball, and for the women's basketball making it to the NCAA tournaments and NIT as well right after the Warriors won the Nationals. I do believe the university is considering it too.

I do believe the university is considering it too. I don't like the idea of having WAC championship banners and NCAA banners in the SSC. Its a great tribute to the university but I think the women's volleyball banners will put the others to shame. We will have a handful of basketball banners and men's volleyball banners and the rest of the SSC will be filled with women's volleyball.

I agree with what you're saying roy, but I think its a good idea. I'm sure the national championship banners will be bigger than the conference championship banners- so at least the national championships will be highlighted. I think the other sports should get some sort of recognition, and the abundance of wahine volleyball banners would show the amazing legacy of the Hawaii program. I may help with recruiting (although I don't think they need much help). I'd rather have this than no recognition for the basketball program because you have to admit that college basketball is a lot more popular than volleyball (even in Hawaii). I mean, last year was the most successful for the program, and yet they have nothing to celebrate it. How about this rule- if they get a ring for it, they should have a banner. In other words, conference and national championships get a banner. But post-season appearances don't get one. I think that's a good comprimise .

Wow, someone sounds really jealous. If you don't want to hear about it, don't read the thread.
