How can she commit to Stanford so early? Does beach vball have different process? She didn't commit to Stanford...she committed to the Stanford application process. She's telling everyone she's going to go to Stanford, provided she gets admitted.

So can you do photo shoots with 24s, when they can’t even visit until August? The next 2 pictures on the Instagram post are in a jersey with a photo backdrop.

NCAA vs. Alston is the case but I've never read that it involved NCAA advertising. The ruling was that the NCAA restricting the amount of education related aid is in violation of the Sherman Act. That's why the $5980 is an academic related bonus.

Many of the elite/college ID camps hand out jerseys and take pictures just in case the PSA wants to use them later. Illinois had several camps earlier in June.

It’s all related but yes, you are accurate about the exact Alston allegations. Edit to add: I learned something new today.

I think your assessment is correct BP but one thing you didn't acknowledge; what happens to the "lower tier" PSA's if the "upper tier" isn't being figured out until they are 18? I still think that all we've done is delayed that work and pressure and now given PSA a shorter timeline to figure things out. I certainly don't have the answers - sort of being the devils advocate here.
1) I don't think it is a shorter timeline - certainly not for the top players. It is just a timeline that starts later. Maybe 'we' will get out of the habit of creating recruiting tapes and other pressurized things when the kids are so young and also start that process later. 2) Next tier - yes, I did think about this. I see where this has a cascade impact down the line. First - almost all of the upper tier is going to 'figure it out' and make a verbal within 6 months (my guess) and unlikely to extend out until they are 18. But even if they do - maybe as a sport we need to stop treating colleges like tiers. I don't think it is healthy for the sport if Nebraska is going to get the top 2 recruits every year - then 2 or 3 more from the top 10. Great players are going to many colleges in basketball. Great players are only going to about 3-4 colleges in volleyball. This is what may be creating this future bottleneck. Overall - I am suggesting we change our expectations - and I think that will happen. Right now, it appears that the expectations are 'get my girl committed before it is too late' - and in the process is having to take in an insane amount of information in such a short period of time. I am suggesting that there is time to properly evaluate the best choice - as long as one is willing to wait as long as just 1 year. Also - coaches are learning from this process just as the PSA and parents are. It may take a couple years before everyone figures out how it will work. Right now - the expectations are off. BP, I want to fully acknowledge that I realize that you're not coming from the perspective of having all the answers, none of us do. Some of us who have gone through the old system and then had to adjust to the new system, see some of the pitfalls. I did want to address this comment and say that it's not likely that parents will stop making highlight videos. Parents want to make sure their kids are on the radars of coaches. If anything I project that more of the mid-tier players are going to utilize tapes and recruiting services in order to ensure they get noticed. Also the tapes aren't really a form of pressure in and of themselves. Sure parents who don't make videos may give you the side eye for making them but everyone has the option to choose the method that works best for them. My kid was never affected by us making videos of her. She just went out and played and had fun. In the end we will navigate and adjust to this brave new world, I just also hope that we will acknowledge the parts that don't work, and adjust those parts too.

Also I have heard girls talk of their family making an unofficial visit without a camp or contact, purchase a shirt, take their own picture (just in case) because this is one of what she thinks may be one of her top choices. Sometimes they have been to previous camps or have strong family ties to the university.

Most if the camps offer “the full Husker/Longhorn/Nittany Lion experience.” That would include uniform photo shoots, I assume.

GUILTY! There were some schools that we went to and let the staff know we were on their campus even though they could not officially meet with us. It was our way of letting them know we were seriously considering their school. We actually got an offer from one of the schools by doing this.
