Watched Skyler Pierce play tonight. Kids legit. Smart hitter and placed the ball well. Kentucky recruiter at the game where is she playing? She plays in Olathe, KS. She’s also well liked and has a great attitude. Good kid. PrepDig has been publishing some great articles on 2024 as well. They seem more comprehensive than PrepVolleyball right now. This was the latest. www.prepdig.com/2021/10/live-eye-high-level-2024s-making-a-statement/

Any other parents of recruits on here feeling disheartened by all the swapping and changes? It’s hard because your kid is trying to get to know the program and the coaches/players are a big part of that. But with players constantly transferring (sometimes not due to anything bad at the program but because they had a good season and want to go “bigger”) it seems like there is just no loyalty. No willing to grow where you are at. I don’t know, maybe it’s because my kid has had the same teammates in club forever and the same staff of club coaches and you just become a family. Sure there are tough patches and problems, but we work through those. Not constantly jumping ship. And then to see all the coaching changes is rough too. Coaches are a huge factor in where a kid commits. I guess I’m not even really looking for advice or anything. Just wondering if anyone else is feeling the same way. This is the first year that we are really getting heavy with recruiting. I’m sure the switches have been going on forever but this is when I’m first noticing it because we are invested in recruiting at this point. It's a tough adjustment, but it is part of the process. Every school that gave an offer and had a female assistant coach, has seen that coach leave for whatever reason. It's hard because that was the person my daughter made a connection with initially. The transfer portal and extra year allowed by the NCAA has also thrown some unforeseen curveballs into the mix. Good luck with the recruiting process. Do your due diligence and check out every avenue as thoroughly as possible. Most times it works out well and you land in a good place.

Pro Tip: Encourage your PSA to focus on the school and team culture vs. the coaching staff. While the coaching staff is important, it should rank #4 or #5 on the checklist to see if a school/team is a good fit. The final question your PSA should ask themselves before they make the final commitment is, "If the entire coaching staff left tomorrow, would I still want to finish out my scholastic career here?" Start with that first and then she will need to adjust on the fly. The transfer portal is now part of the game. Many think it evens the playing field in regards to the "Coaching Carousel". The end game for most is a degree and a great playing experience. Make sure your PSA capitalizes on that.

I’m sure the switches have been going on forever but this is when I’m first noticing it because we are invested in recruiting at this point. I have a 2024 daughter. From what I gather, the transfer ports is much more active due t the NCAA giving an extra year of eligibility due to covid. Our daughters will have 1 year of that impacting their experience. A good number of the transfers are due to the loss of scholarship bc their school is honoring the offers given to younger incoming athletes. I imagine the portal will be used less after our girls have had 1 year in college. It just does factor into the 2024 athlete, but 2024s have it way better than 2022 and 2023s. I keep saying to my daughter, where would you like to go that you would be happy going to achool and possibly sitting the bench. Of course she wants to play, but 12 scholarships are given and multiple girls don’t get to play. The covid year has amplified transfers this year (and will for the next three years), but all of the prominent transfers over the last three years have had nothing to do with covid and every team in contention this year had very significant contributions from transfers. The phenomena will continue for long after the extra year of eligibility has faded. I also think even the direct impact of the extra covid year will be felt for years after those players have left. Schools redshirt a lot of freshman this year to account for the super seniors. The same will happen next year and the year after. All of those redshirt players will have a 5th year down the road.

"If the volleyball goes south for whatever reason, which school would you enjoy going to?" That was another challenge for the 22's (and 23's I think). Doing visits when you couldn't really get a feel for the campus. That and having to do Zoom visits.

Players who are transferring now - for the most part made their commitments very early. Many have grown and changed physically, athletically, emotionally since they committed. The program they committed to may seem very different now or maybe their academic needs have changed. Recruiting rules changes will help with some of this, but alot of it is here to stay for the reasons mentioned by others. Also it used to be much harder to transfer and so players were forced to suck it up. Now, they have alot more freedom in that regard.
