What is really the timeline for recruiting for 24s? Technically coaches cant talk to them until the summer right? Outside of the athlete sending them film and messages is there anything else going on until this summer?

Coaches will certainly/have already been on the club / qualifier circuit over the winter the next few months, but you are right, no communication can happen until summer. 2024's will be in high demand from a recruiting perspective given the covid and transfer portal effect on the 2023's and 2022's. This was evident in observations at GJNC. 2024's were receiving the bulk of the looks from pack's of coaches in Vegas. I assume that will contniue during this year's club season.

Even though most of the 22's and 23's at our club have landed somewhere or will soon; I still feel like they were skipped over a little bit and ended up at unexpected schools. Mid-major D1 or a little lower. In a normal year I think some of our girls would have ended up at slightly higher profile schools.

I keep saying to my daughter, where would you like to go that you would be happy going to achool and possibly sitting the bench. Of course she wants to play, but 12 scholarships are given and multiple girls don’t get to play. Yes, I said the same thing to mine. "If the volleyball goes south for whatever reason, which school would you enjoy going to?" That was another challenge for the 22's (and 23's I think). Doing visits when you couldn't really get a feel for the campus. That and having to do Zoom visits. Did you ever float Trump University by her?

Along those lines, another conversation I would have with your 2024 PSA's. Be prepared to sit on the bench for your Frosh and Soph seasons. While there will be a handful of 2024 Freshmen standout's and program changers, with the transfer portal and super seniors dominating over the next few years, you should be preparing your athlete to sit and focus on academics and training the first couple of years. The vast majority will not start out of the gate.

I know a lot of 2023s were told by coaches they couldn't offer until decisions were made on current players staying for the extra year or not and I am sure the transfer craziness is adding to that. I'm guessing once that dies down with spring enrollment, more 2023s will commit.
But I do think that 2024s will feel that trickle down as well and may end up at a bit lower schools than expected like canamvballdad mentioned. I've been watching many of the higher level schools that have expressed interest in my 2024 get transfers or 2023s at her position and wondering how things will shake out. I guess you just have to wait and see who ends up contacting them in June.
I do think the coaches swarming the 2024 courts last June was more because that was the first chance they got to see them in person after the extended covid dead period.

I've been on my soapbox about this many times but I don't think the NCAA giving everyone a covid freebie year was the way to go. I could understand doing it for the seniors but it has created the trickle down log jam that we see now. I thought that the situation might alleviate itself by the time we got to the '24's but maybe not. Superstar 24's won't be affected but even the really good ones might. Good luck everyone, don't rush your decisions but don't wait too long either.

Honestly, I don’t think that would be the worst thing in the world to sit a year as opposed to leaving high school in January your senior year to get up to speed. These kids already do not have a normal HS experience and sacrifice so much. Finishing HS out would be nice. Not complaining about any of it as I know it’s a privilege and this is my kid’s passion. But I do see a silver lining if they are told to expect to sit the first year. [/quote] We were very happy that my kid's future school had no expectation of her coming early. She is loving getting to do all the typical Senior things like going to homecoming football games, Prom, and all the activities that are happening in the winter. We're happy she gets to experience her final year of High School and have proper closure. They only get to do this stuff once.

If there was no season, then every player would have taken an automatic redshirt and you would be in pretty much the same situation. That would screw players who also took a natural redshirt year and it would have been watered down by that number (if an allowance was not made), but otherwise would have had the exact same effect on the 21, 22 and 23 classes with no special rules change.

Players who are transferring now - for the most part made their commitments very early. Many have grown and changed physically, athletically, emotionally since they committed. The program they committed to may seem very different now or maybe their academic needs have changed. Recruiting rules changes will help with some of this, but alot of it is here to stay for the reasons mentioned by others. Also it used to be much harder to transfer and so players were forced to suck it up. Now, they have alot more freedom in that regard. Also, when you commit 8 years before you will graduate, the odds of a coaching change among assistants is basically 100%, and among head coaches is very high. Going through the transfer process was night and day different from being recruited in 9th grade, and so much better. PSA did everything and made all the important choices, with parents just acting as a sounding board, not directing the process. Way closer to what recruiting out of high school should look like. I would be fine if recruiting always took place after the end of the fall season senior year. None of these 1000 or more transfers knew where they were going before entering the portal, and it seems to work out OK. Recruiters may tell me I am crazy, but I like it from the other side.

Had that been the case, who pays for that automatic redshirt year? The school or the athlete? Nothing changes. Whatever your scholarship says it what happens. Assume a guaranteed 4 year scholarship at a P5. If Covid fell within the first 4 years, the school pays for that redshirt year. When the 5th year rolls around, the school decides whether to offer, and the player chooses whether to accept, just like a normal redshirt year.

With all the transfer portal grabs, will 2024s even be recruited by the top schools? I’ve got a libero so that makes it even harder. But looking at the top 5-10 schools, will they even bother with 2024s? Yes, the most talented will be recruited as usual and the rest of the field will be recruited later on. Some girls may end up at D2 schools but overall I believe the class of 2024 will find places to land. So will your DD.

But looking at the top 5-10 schools, will they even bother with 2024s? By all indications yes. In order to build a strong program across the board, P5 schools will maintain their recruiting strategy but use the transfer portal to fill in gaps (often times caused by the transfer portal). The goal should always be to recruit strong and build from within, but at some point you have a team with stacked talent not being utilized and stiting on the bench. (See Texas , Nebraska, etc.. etc..) those not being fully utilized may opt to be an impact player at another program (transfer portal) which creates opportunities to fill in said gaps. For example, Nebraska due to recent events (transfer portal being part of that) had some uncertainty in the middle. With the depth chart uncertainty, if they opted to bring in Hord becuase of being light in the middle and an incoming Freshman. They used the TP to shore up the middle position. I am pretty sure they chose a 5th year for her experience and the mentorship opportunity that presents for the incoming Freshmen etc.. For the forseeable future, the transfer portal will be part of the game and all schools have to play that game. That will not stop schools from recruiting talent.
