They are dropping eleven varsity sports, including MVB.
In the words of AD Bernard Muir,
Earlier this morning, I informed student-athletes from 11 of our varsity sports that Stanford will discontinue their sports at the varsity level at the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year. Those 11 sports are: men’s and women’s fencing, field hockey, lightweight rowing, men’s rowing, co-ed and women’s sailing, squash, synchronized swimming, men’s volleyball, and wrestling.
As a generous philanthropic supporter of Stanford Athletics, I felt it was important to share this news with you directly. I would encourage you to read the letter announcing the decision and the FAQ document that accompanied the letter, which explain the context and rationale behind this painful decision.
This is heartbreaking news to share. These 11 programs consist of more than 240 incredible student-athletes and 22 dedicated coaches. They were built by more than 4,000 alumni, whose contributions led to 20 national championships, 27 Olympic medals, and an untold number of academic and professional achievements. Each of the individuals associated with these programs will forever have a place in Stanford’s history.
We remain committed to a strong and vibrant varsity athletics program at Stanford, and we are confident that these changes will position Stanford Athletics, and our remaining 25 varsity programs, for sustained excellence and leadership in athletics, academics, and education through sport.
While we still have work to do to stabilize our financial position, even after making these difficult decisions, we are committed to doing that work. We hope you will join us in building a sustainable future where scholar-athleticism continues to thrive.
Thank you for your continued support, as we all look forward to better days ahead.
