Yea he was very active on social media after Bryants death and i knew prior to that he was a huge fan. Bryant also impacted the volleyball world in SoCal with his affiliated volleyball club that his daughter played for. Prep players were always psyched to see him at tournaments. Mistakes may have been made in his life, cheating isn’t something exclusive to him but he made his amends to the people that mattered and he doesn’t owe anything to some random D-Bag on volleytalk. Celebrate the best of a person’s character and understand that we are all flawed by nature as human beings. I understand this discussion is painful. I'd prefer to drop it. I'd hoped to. I'll let this be my last post on the topic. It's clear from the posts that Bryant is looked up to by many. But, as a sports icon, he is a controversial lightning rod, and in my mind a strange choice to idolize. There are so many clearly more worthy of that status.
Cowell is a good kid, fresh and full of optimism. He wants to believe in his hero. But unlike him, I'm old as dirt and have seen much of the dirty underbelly of our world. And on VT, yes, just another random D-bag.
In my long life, I've known many sexual assault victims personally, some very close to me. One young woman I dated in my youth, shared with me she'd been left for dead in a snow bank years earlier, bleeding out, after a date rape. A car driving by spotted her, she was revived in the ambulance. I've been on a State court criminal jury, judging the guilt or innocence of a man charged with the rape of a minor. I didn't want that responsibility, but the judge had to keep dismissing members of the jury pool because so many of them had been subject to sexual assault or had family members who had been. In the military, I investigated or sat in judgement of many cases of sexual assault. Most of these very personal assault cases don't get adjudicated in a criminal court. Most sexual assaults don't ever get reported.
The criminal charges filed against Bryant, then dropped, were for sexual assault. But the facts of the case were compelling, and the victim was able to proceed civilly and get a settlement and a forced apology, and Bryant in exchange was able to get her silence going forward. In the 20 months up to the settlement the victim was subject to death threats from Bryant fans, according to her.
She was nineteen, working a shift in a hotel. She did not have a team of well paid lawyers and publicists working for her, as Bryant did, and as he did for the rest of his life. Advising him on how to stay out of jail, how to repair his relationship with his wife (a four million dollar rare rock helped), how to protect his multi-million dollar endorsements, how to re-create his public image. He had the backing of the powerful LA Lakers. He was their star player, the face of their organization. If they weighed they could keep him, they'd back him publicly and financially. And they did. This was long before the #MeToo movement. Bryant in today's environment, might have spent time in jail.
I recognize that Bryant walked a straighter narrower path afterwards. But his restitution to his victim was a forced apology and silence money. His restitution to his wife was a large expensive piece of jewelry and an apology. His restitution to his fans was to win basketball games. He did no time in jail. It's not for me to judge him. But I don't have to idolize him, and I won't. And, for the youth out there that do, well, know the whole story. And know that young kids someday may look at you for inspiration. Be worthy of it.
lol shut up. it's not hard to not post about this %*$# on a HAWAII VOLLEYBALL DISCUSSION BOARD. gtfo

I want to know the schedule too. Thought I heard Charlie Wade say they are starting where they left off playing at CSUN, but things may have changed. I wonder if any of the matches will be televised. I’ve been a season ticket holder, so I’ll need to subscribe to the channel. Does anyone know if any UH sports are currently being televised? Like UH basketball? I'm pretty sure basketball has been televised. And if you look at the basketball schedule it does say Spectrum sports for all the home games

I’m guessing almost all of UH men’s volleyball home matches will be televised because Spectrum lost out on the Wahine’s volleyball season. Got to make up the lost women’s matches by televising more men’s volleyball, baseball and softball. Might even be forced to televise sand volleyball .

That's right, when we were on HawaiianTel, we could watch men's volleyball and mens/womens basketball. The only thing we weren't able to watch was Women's Volleyball. Because spectrum has exclusive rights to it. I also watch it on my phone via the Spectrum TV app, now that the Spectrum service is under my name.

BTW, the Wahine matches used to be on the Spectrum Sports channel until Spectrum moved them to OC16 channel.

Currently, this season, Men's and Women's Basketball home matches have been shown on Spectrum. The matches played in California have been shown on either BigWest.TV, or ESPN3. It should not change for Men's Volleyball, I am thinking.

The kid might have wanted to come here but maybe Wade didn’t think he was worthy. I mean almost every year there are stories or articles about certain prospects is headed here but they never showed up. I still remember a few years ago there was a article about this African American MB from Las Vegas that was supposed to be a Warrior and when the season started, there was no mention of the guy. This is not the story of the LV middle blocker but this is an example of someone who was supposed to come here but never showed up. He was not on the roster for any year for UH the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2005/Jun/28/sp/sp01p.html

Seeing Croix in club he was always super athletic but not the best passer for his size and not the best attitude either. I think there are plenty of D1-D2 programs he would do a great job at. But with the amount of pin depth Hawaii has and as young as it is, the writing was very noticeably on the wall. Still hope to see him show up somewhere, if he puts real effort in he can be someone’s Colton Cowell in his 2nd/3rd year. CSUN would be a great fit.

What's going on with UH's schedule? If you go back a few pages you'll see that vballfreak808 replied to volleybolero in regards to the release of Hawaii's schedule. Not playing until March, only playing Big West, playing twice rather than three or more times. Hosting Big West Tournament. Don't be surprised to see schedule come out right before season starts, a bunch of women's teams announced it week of games. Won't matter anyways since fans aren't allowed to attend.

I was fine with reading this on the thread. And I respect the thought behind the opinion expressed, even if others did not like seeing or reading it.
