Wright State was the regular-season Champ, #1 overall seed in the Horizon Tournament. They were upset by the #4 Northern Kentucky Norse (who went on to win the AQ and Conference Tournament). Wright State received an unprecedented at-large bid from the Horizon into the NCAA Tournament. They had a quality OOC win at Notre Dame which was the difference between them making the tournament or not. Some might feel Green Bay and/or Milwaukee got snubbed on bids last season. Green Bay was #45 in RPI and had beaten 3 Top 50 teams. VCU, a team worse in RPI, got an at-large bid with just 1 Top 50 win. Milwaukee was #53 in RPI and had five Top 50 wins. (3x) against #45 Green Bay! After trying to watch a couple Horizon League matches it seems like the 2019 HL was a flash in the pan. Wright State played an unimpressive "#3". Green Bay got spanked. I'm not sleeping on the future of the HL. But I'm short selling this year. HL stock is way down. I agree, Horizon league is down. Seems like the recruiting has gone backwards.

They've been sending their Freshmen back to High School? Yeah, that would kill a program pretty quickly.

Hopefully the Horizon League was just shaking off the rust from not playing in over a year. We will get to see how #2 Northern Kentucky looks tomorrow as they face #1 Wright State(2-0). NKU had the bye on week one. #3 Milwaukee (0-2) faces an undefeated Cleveland State. These two matches should show us how give us an idea of how good the league is this year.

Wright State continues to look REALLY good. Easily taking the opening set against NKU.

Impressive win for Wright State tonight. In a normal year, they might be good enough to push for another at large. This year, all that matters are their last 2 matches. I don't think going undefeated before a loss in the Horizon final would be good enough. Maybe if they keep up this level of dominance.

I agree that the horizon league seems down from the limited amount of matches I've seen. I watched Wright State's first two matches, the most recent being WS vs NKU, and I think they are an ok team, but the competition was less than expected. NKU had flashes of great high level play, but overall the match reminded me of mediocre club teams. Ball control was not good on the NKU side. WS's Laney Stephenson is a nice setter. She can play.

Don't sleep on UIC. Have basically a whole new roster with a grad student transfer setter from Auburn (sorry don't know the names yet). Offense looks good and ball control definitely improved. Schedules don't list a regular season match up with Wright State - I assume there will be a League Tourney? Oakland had a bye this week but have added a nice frosh outside hitter (Ciserini sp?) who performed well opening weekend. Wright State returned basically everyone and had a late transfer OH (wolf) who slid into the open spot left by graduation. Offense is spread, just like last year, and Libero of the Year (Story) is back. Green Bay is struggling to recover from losing Yoss (setter of the year) to graduation and Wolf (POY) who transferred out. Had the first look at NKU and they just got run over by WSU. They graduated two starters and are running a 5/1 this season. Seem to have all the parts but just looked out of sorts. Didn't help that all league first teamer Brinkman was gone for the second WSU match. I would expect Hart to have them playing much better in the coming weeks.
I am not sure I agree that the league is down, historically. Last year there were four really good teams - normally there are only 2-3 so in that sense last year was a fluke. But this year seems to be panning out as typical - in my opinion.
After two weeks of play, here are my rankings:
1. UIC 2. Wright State 3. Oakland 4. NKU/MKE/Cleveland 5.- 10. Everyone else.

Why are they playing on Monday and Tuesday? Seems to be a lot of missed class time if they have in person classes.
