And this is worrying: www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-japan-vaccines/japan-likely-to-hit-covid-19-herd-immunity-in-october-months-after-olympics-researcher-idUSKBN29U0F2Japan is likely to achieve herd immunity to COVID-19 through mass inoculations only months after the planned Tokyo Olympics, even though it has locked in the biggest quantity of vaccines in Asia, according to a London-based forecaster. That would be a blow to Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga who has pledged to have enough shots for the populace by the middle of 2021, as it trails most major economies in starting COVID-19 inoculations.
“Japan looks to be quite late in the game,” Rasmus Bech Hansen, the founder of British research firm Airfinity, told Reuters. “They’re dependent on importing many (vaccines) from the U.S. And at the moment, it doesn’t seem very likely they will get very large quantities of for instance, the Pfizer vaccine.”
Hansen said Japan will not reach a 75% inoculation rate, a benchmark for herd immunity, until around October, about two months after the close of the Summer Games.
Japan has arranged to buy 314 million doses from Pfizer, Moderna Inc and AstraZeneca Plc, and that would be more than enough for its population of 126 million. But problems seen in vaccine rollouts elsewhere stir doubt that Japan will get those supplies on time.
Taro Kono, Japan’s vaccine programme chief, said last week it would begin its first shots in February, starting with 10,000 medical workers, but he walked back on a goal to secure enough vaccine supplies by June.
Japan is particularly vulnerable because its initial inoculation plan is dependent on Pfizer doses, which are at risk of being taken back by U.S. authorities to fight the pandemic there.
“There simply aren’t enough vaccines for all the countries that Pfizer made agreements with,” Hansen said.Thank goodness for American big pharma. Amirite?

If Tokyo turns it down, I’m sure Texas is willing and able to host on a moment’s notice. A 3 hour flight away and Beijing will be ready to host in no time. Foreigners are having a hard time getting into their respective pro clubs. How much more the number of athletes at the olympics?

Working with the domestic pro volleyball league is a very low priority for national governments. That's why it's a headache. The Olympics are a high priority. The Japanese government will have precise procedures for athletes traveling into the country. It'll probably be much simpler than what pro athletes have had to deal with while traveling abroad.

I hope you are right...you are assuming things go according to plan but one should never underestimate the challenges this pandemic throws up.

I don't know where in Florida you could hold a July marathon and not have people die. Atlanta was bad enough.
They might have to literally run along the beach. And the poor horsies - good time to give equestrian the boot I guess.

Hehe, I'll say that is a pretty mediocre attempt to advertise the state's credentials despite their slipshod record in tackling the pandemic.

I only mention FL because they actually offered to host officially; obviously TX could do it too, but they haven't gone on the record yet. As was the case in Atlanta, not every sport or venue has to be in the host city. I mean, I'm pretty sure soccer was in Birmingham, AL and softball was in Columbus, GA and I'm sure the sailing was somewhere near Savannah (I don't know). Point is, you could have the hub at Disney, with sports scattered all over the venues in Orlando, Tampa, Miami/FTL, Jacksonville, Daytona...literally everywhere; you could even get up in to Atlanta, Bham, New Orleans or even as far away as Nashville...kind of a joint Southeastern US kinda thing. No big opening ceremony with a full stadium, you could have 1 ceremony in Orlando in the Citrus Bowl, and stream it, BOOM.

I think NYC is the better choice. We would only have to have one event out of region (Canoe Slalom).
Japan is having a serious problem in their health care system with capacity and they are fearful that if foreigners get sick, they will not be able to accommodate them.

I do not expect the Olympics to happen. I was just reading in an aggregated news source that a poll in Japan found that 80% of Japanese citizens don't want the Tokyo Olympics to occur in 2021. Not good!

Not good! People don't want it, the government does...definitely a tricky one. P.S. - Proposing NYC as a host was a joke right?
