Hopefully Stanford and BYU will meet in late August or September.

I don't think y'all realize that it's not just an "easy switch" for Koerber OR Grimmer to play on the left. Regardless of whether or not they had some good swings on the left this year, when it becomes your position you will get a LOT more balls set and more specifically a lot that are out of system. It was even difficult for Drews to score OOS this year unless STK made a perfect set. There is a reason Drews is one of the ONLY lefties on the outside and it's because she simply was an elite player. Now I am not saying Koerber couldn't do it, I think she could eventually make the adjustment and score fairly well, but she will definitely be more terminal on the right, as will Grimmer.
As far as the Bower/Meyer situation goes, y'all acting like Whitney is your daughter with how defensive you are. No one is dissing Whitney or saying she is a bad setter by any means. I think she is an ABSOLUTE athlete. But the FACT of the matter is that she can be a blocking liability. I am not saying that merits her leaving the court, but it's not wrong to say that other teams have and will take advantage when she is in the front row. That is literally the game of volleyball. It's not a diss on Whitney, it's literally just a fact that she is a short setter, so don't let your feelings get in the way of acknowledging her height. Meyer has the potential to also become and elite setter and I don't think it's offensive or outrageous to say she might get some playing time.

I don't believe anyone ever claimed that it was an "easy switch" to go from the right to the left. And Meyer literally has zero experience at the collegiate level, while Bower was the WCC player of the year. No one is disputing that she's a liability in blocking. She is, though we're talking about maybe one point lost every four or five sets. I think it makes sense to redshirt Meyer (playing her this fall isn't zero cost), and it has nothing to do with "feelings." If I thought that Bower was not performing well enough, then I would advocate for Olmstead to do something different. I agree that Meyer has the potential to be really good also. I just don't think there's any real need to rush her into action right away. But we'll see what Olmstead decides after seeing her in practice.

This guy again? We get it, you don't like the Bowers. At least you are not ripping our coach like you did last time (at least not directly). But really, BYU has a "huge red flag" because of a recruit? Heather Olmstead has this team and this program is making great progress. What this team did far exceeded my expectations--I give a lot of credit to Heather Olmstead but also the players who appeared to get better throughout the year (just wish I could have watched more). Just curious how much volleyball you actually do watch and how much experience you have as a player. Did you watch Texas and Jhenna Gabriel? Why do you think the national runner up starts a 5'8 setter? Interesting what happened to their 6'2 sports performance setter. Texas and BYU have some surprising similarities (and deficiencies) and reasons for playing the setters they play. More than anything this past year has taught me to trust in what Heather Olmstead is doing (especially over time, I didn't understand the Whitney Bower, starting a 17 year old setter last year, but I do now. I have all the confidence in BYU's coaching staff to get the right people in the right spot. Dodson and Livingston are also very good examples. Again, Heather Olmstead has been pretty darn good with recruits. We had a starting Libero, MB and OH1 that were all freshman. But, hey, there is a big "red flag" because of a single recruit (that will not show up for 2 years)? So when you say a "huge red flag" because of a 2022 recruit...I am thinking this is simply a smear/hate post because you have an ax to grind. I will never understand the obsession with Bower's height for some people. Sure, it would be nice if she was taller. But she's so good at setting, digging, attacking, and serving that I'll gladly take that tradeoff. Since you mentioned Gabriel, Bower's stats line up pretty well: Bower : .76 k/s, .400, 10.73 a/s, 3.51 d/s, 22 aces 21 service errors, .44 b/s, .302 team hitting percentage (5th in NCAA) Gabriel: .15 k/s, -.026, 11.30 a/a, 2.18 d/s, 12 aces, 41 service errors, .31 b/s, .334 team hitting percentage (3rd in NCAA) Comparing Bower's blocking to Final Four Setters:
| Touch % | Good % | Err % | Bower | 5.8% | 49.6% | 32.1% | Gabriel | 4.0% | 50.7% | 33.1% | Hilley | 5.4% | 42.3% | 33.0% | Powell | 6.1% | 38.3% | 40.8% | Lilley | 6.7% | 52.0% | 28.5% |
Lilley was definitely the best blocker of that group. But Bower isn't substantially below the others.

Whether or not someone used the exact phrase of "easy switch" or not, the point is that I (unlike many of you) don't see Koerber or Grimmer moving to the left. And I obviously do hope for Bower to start and assume that she will play always. I am simply saying it is NICE to have a taller option if needed. So many smart coaches in the past have subbed in a tall setter, regardless of how good the other setter is, and it has proven to be successful in key moments for some teams. I do think the ideal situation is that Bower continues to grow and play at a high level and we can redshirt Meyer to maximize her time at BYU.

I don't disagree too much with any of this, though I guess I think Olmstead will experiment with the pins. But we'll see.

I don't think we will see Koerber on the left (I don't think it's impossible they try her on the left, just unlikely). She's only going to be around for one season. I think you'll get maximum productivity from her if the staff changes as little as possible for her: six rotations on the right. My guess is that Koerber gets the majority of time on the right, and Grimmer sometimes starts against easier teams in the front rotations (Koerber still plays in the back and maybe hits the D-ball). If Koerber had multiple years of eligibility left, I think experimentation would be more likely particularly because both Koerber and Grimmer hit pretty well on the left in the one rotation where they have to do it.

I think Koerber's all-around game makes her way too valuable for her not to play six rotations. My guess is that Olmstead will experiment with the outside hitter positions with Ballard-Nixon, Livingston, and Grimmer (and possibly have Grimmer play on the right in the front row at times as you suggest) and possibly one or more of the incoming freshmen if any of them can pass better than the current options. It will be interesting to see how Olmstead handles this. BYU only had one six-rotation pin hitter last season, so with Bower running a 5-1, I think Olmstead should have enough substitutions to make it work.

I hear you about being a lefty and playing on the left...not easy. However, I am thinking that Koerber got lots of reps on the left at Utah (heard the trained Drews and Koerber at both pins. Regardless, I am excited that Olmstead has options. It seems like when she does, we get the most out of them. I really really like our pin play going into next year and the possibilities. And, what I was able to see, Koerber was a very good back row player.

I am not super familiar with how the transfer portal has worked out it the past. Does almost every player in the portal find a team to transfer to, or do some just end up staying where they are at?
