Dodson had a nice offensive season as a middle. I did this earlier in the year for the partial results, but here are her hitting and blocking stats for the matches where she played MB instead of OH: name | team | Position | SP | K | E | TA | HPCT | K/S
| BS
| BA
| BLK/S |
---|
Dodson | BYU | MB/OH | 63 | 112 | 34 | 269 | 0.290 | 1.778 | 4 | 48 | 0.825 | Dodson (MB) | BYU | MB | 53 | 89 | 25 | 194 | 0.330 | 1.679 | 3 | 45 | 0.906 |
Pretty nice offensive numbers for her Freshman year that included a position switch in the 4th match of the season. Somebody is going to get a very talented player. I imagine she'll land at a very good school.

I thought I saw Sophia Callahan, a 2021 OH had committed to BYU?

I thought I saw Sophia Callahan, a 2021 OH had committed to BYU? You're, of course, correct. I had her listed in an earlier table, but somehow removed her when I updated the table recently. Thanks for noticing the omission. Fixed it in the post.

I am not super familiar with how the transfer portal has worked out it the past. Does almost every player in the portal find a team to transfer to, or do some just end up staying where they are at? If no-one wants you, you transfer to a D II and become an All American..

Thanks for noticing the omission. Fixed it in the post. I have had two SoCal volleyball friends tell me that Callahan "could be" the real deal and a steal for BYU--kind of like Erin Livingston who did not develop until later in the recruiting process. They like her length and upside. I think BYU has a real advantage picking up these later developing kids and getting them in the development pipeline. Its easy to think of McKenna Miller being the norm (immediate 4 year starter) but people forget the development process and growth of players like RJP or Grey--IMO BYU does a great job developing pins.

I’d imagine there were some tough end-of-season coach/player interviews being held at BYU, but I never saw Dodson leaving. Maybe she was told they would move her back to OH? Or maybe she was unhappy in general. Really hate to see her leave. #pleasedonotgotoutah
So many talented players on and coming into the BYU team. Going to be tough keeping everyone happy.

I think that is right. Definitely an influx in talent over the next couple of years (and the competition should be intense). Some athletes will embrace it ... others will not. I am disappointed to see Dodson leave. As I have stated previously, I think she was a big part of our success this year. I thought she was a change of pace to the prototypical BYU middle. I don't see her going to Utah--doesn't fit their offensive style. Oregon? Arizona State?

First time poster here.
I think this promises to be an interesting year for the lady Cougs and Coach Olmstead. Last year, IMO, was one of her best ever coaching jobs, but feel that many posters are over estimating the contributions collectively of our two new transfers--and, as a result, will require some more great coaching and juggling. I believe the moment Koerber steps on the court this August, she will be the 6 rotation pin due to much better passing and overall mobility from the back row than we would get from TBN. However, I also believe Grimmer was the most effective pin on the team by the end of Spring over Livingston (who far exceeded my expectations) and TBN, who perhaps due to injuries, has rarely lived up, at least in my mind, to what I thought she would do for us. It would have made things simpler for Olmstead if Koerber was an OH than an Oppo and she effectively replaced or augmented TBN while allowing Grimmer to continue to grow and develop. As it is, and assuming that this board is right that Olmstead stays with a 5-1, Bower then effectively replaces one of the Outsides--I think--while Grimmer comes in when Koerber is in the back row. If I am right, this really sets up a dog fight for swings from the left side, and could be a part of the reason for the Morgan Johnson and Leilani Dodson transfers. If I am wrong (Grimmer redshirts?), then I think these transfers don't help as much as some think.
This really would be a great year for Olmstead to consider a 6-2 and let her weapons loose, IMO. That said, the possibility of redshirting Meyer and having an elite setter for the next 5 years has to feel good to her too.

Can I just say I am loving our men's team--and as a side note, this only helps the women's program. I am pumped for this coming year. And the best thing is it IS going to be a dog fight. There is not a better coaching family than the Olmsteads--partly because they buy into the competition/cauldron mentality instilled by Carl more than most of us other disciples.
There is going to be intense competition...at all positions. And that is exactly when the Olmsteads thrive as coaches. RS, OH, Setter, MB and Libero/DS. I personally don't think anyone is "completely" safe (including Eschenberg or Bower)...and as a fan who wants BYU to succeed, I couldn't be more happy about it. We have not had this kind of competition at BYU for a long long time at so many positions and it is a VERY VERY GOOD THING. Personally, I don't think Eschenberg or Bower need to be pushed that much...but I hope they feel the pressure because it will only make them better. Where I think the dog fight will help us the most is on the pins (both left and right) and with passing (and with the second team pushing the first team every day in practice). Playing in the WCC we need this. Just my opinion...and hope.

That said, the possibility of redshirting Meyer and having an elite setter for the next 5 years has to feel good to her too. Koerber is a significant upgrade over Grimmer in every way. Grimmer hit .167 against Wisconsin and .118 against UCLA, Koerber hit .429 and .368 against that UCLA team. Koerber is a better blocker than Grimmer. Koerber has a tougher serve - she led the Pac in aces per set and opponents had a 42% good pass rate vs her serve. Grimmer's serve gave up a 71% good pass rate - that is a free ball. Koerber is a better passer and floor defender than Grimmer, Dayton or Wee. Not having to play Dayton and Wee (assuming Gretchen Reinert is healthy) will upgrade BYU's ball control and make Allen better too. Replacing Grimmer with Koerber upgrades every phase of the game for BYU.
