Well the question becomes with Meyer now gone, who will be BYU's back up setter if Bower is unable to play? I think BYU will have more success recruiting a promising freshman than trying to get someone good from the portal because (as mentioned), whoever comes to BYU knows they'll be sitting on the bench behind Bower for a couple of years. A freshman might be fine with this opportunity to learn behind Bower for the first 2 years and then get to run the team herself in her last 2, but a transfer is not going to "blow" their last year of eligibility sitting on the bench. I also can't help but remember hearing a few years ago that LHE was originally a walk on...what a gift! I don't remember who it was, but I remember someone suggesting that best-case scenario, Tayler Hifo decides to come back. Worst-case, they can get a preferred walk-on from Salt Lake or Utah County. And yes, LHE was originally a walk-on as far as I'm aware, though I can't find any media reports on it.

I have it on good authority, BYU has offered a scholarship to a setter from Arizona. She is a bit miffed, however, they didn’t want her in the first place.
I thought Taylor Hifo’s husband football career was the reason she entered the portal?

Didn't know that. That's great. She is an example of player they worked very hard to get better and did at BYU. I miss her as a senior almost as much as I miss Danielle Stetler. I would love to have her return to BYU volleyball in some capacity. I think my favorite Stetler moment is early in the 2018 season at Duke, she came in for a struggling Roni Jones Perry and hit like 0.400. “A struggling Roni Jones Perry”. Didn’t know she ever struggled 😉

The Cardinals picked him up in August, but I don't think he has played. Edit: Hifo was waived by the Cardinals a week after they signed him. We'll see if he gets another shot this offseason.

Well, she was 3 kills /6 errors/17 TA. Really the only match it happened in 2018 until that final four.

I think she said she wants to go to law school and said she is currently studying for the LSAT.

She did say that on Instagram, but it's easy enough to defer law school for a year. I know plenty of people who have done it. I have a friend who is taking the LSAT again this week, and she was originally planning to go to law school last year, but she decided to wait another year because it was better for her personal situation. And I went to law school a year later than I originally planned because I didn't get into where I wanted the first time. I'm not making any predictions on what Hifo will decide to do, as I have no idea. Just saying that if she wants, she could go to law school a year later. Your LSAT is good for five years.

Her former HS coach said Hifo is definitely playing volleyball next year and in Utah. Decker is interesting and would make a lot of sense. My club buddies in so cal are telling me that BYU could have a bunch of Arizona kids over the next three to four years. They are all well known LDS kids. Same club buddies that gave me the scoop on Callahan -- that was dead on. Just sayin.

Personally, I hope Olmstead gives Bower a try on the right. BYU is deep on the left side, but there is no obvious backup to Grimmer going into 2022. Given Bower's size and length and power, she could potentially be good on the right.

Just coming across these posts as club has started in earnest here in SoCal. Eden didn't generate much interest from many big D-1's during her fresh-soph years except, BYU. I think it was her knee issue that sidelined her, literally. But she certainly has a D-1 body and can hit a pretty heavy ball, she struggles to play defense and s/r is a major liability. People can blame her time off or whatever, but saying that she can play 6 rotations at a high level is wishful thinking at this point. Maybe she gets there in the future, but she was targeted the entire Durango Classic despite beating an Assumption team (which got beat by multiple teams). Mountainview (Utah) beat her Skyview team and MV appears to have played for the state championship in 5A (Utah). That same MV team has Mia Lee, the BYU recruit. BYU will have a log jam at OH with 6-7 girls competing for 1 spot in 2022. Bower, IMO doesn't have the odds in her favor unless Olmstead just promotes based on last name (which I doubt). The one issue that some on this board say is a positive for Bower is her jumping. I have no idea where that information came from. She is a medium jumper at best and she struggles to block. The Hive Club 16 team just destroyed the Idaho Crush 18 team that Eden was on. She had to block the Harvey girls, Mendelson and contain the back row hitting ability of the Hive team. It didn't go well, but the Idaho Crush team had mostly 17 aged girls and Eden's age forced them to play up. Not a good result for them in any qualifying tourney. They never beat the Hive team or any of the Club V 17 teams out of UTah, the whole season. I am not proclaiming Eden as over-rated but I am also realistic that she isn't a starting OH caliber player at BYU this next year or in 2023. Looking for a legit 6 rotation OH for BYU. Until they find 2 of them or another Koerber plus a 6 rotation OH they won't be playing past the sweet 16. Can Callahan or Stowell do it? Responding to marnvbc2 I think the criticism of Eden Bower seems a bit personal with strange digs at her HS and club teams somehow correlating to what she can be at BYU. Her HS team this year beat the Utah 6a State Champs, Oregon 6a State Champs, won ID state championship, went 5-1 in Durango beating Assumption and barely lost the 1 match to a quality team. Chatter at the tourney from recruiters was Eden and her teammate (2024 Oregon commit) were 2 of the most physical hitters in the tourney and we're formidable. Edens HS team finished #13 in the country (AVCA USA Today) despite only really having 3 high level players. They consistently beat much deeper teams. The MV Utah loss (barely in 5 sets) was their 1st match of the season and MV already had several matches/tourney under their belt. The Crush 18 team actually was starting a few 16 year olds and was very undersized at middle. The Crush 17 team that Eden was on later in the season still had several 16 year olds and sometimes used 15 year olds and did indeed beat some Club V teams and did quite well the last part of the season. Eden's passing has steadily improved as she has played catch up from missing an entire year. Not an excuse...a fact. Although her jumping isn't elite she has a really big wing span reach and does indeed touch 10'5 which will only get better as she puts in the work. I could be wrong but I think she's gonna do well. Could be a year or 2 but she will get there in my opinion. Thanks for the insight on Eden. Speaking of which, she was just named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Idaho.

The Bowers are definitely polarizing--not sure why. I did not quite overlap at BYU with the mother--Carolyn. I was coaching a club team after graduating and we took them to the Wasatch tournament that was hosted at BYU (I know I am dating myself here) and I believe she was one of the ones that ran it (there where a couple of former BYU women's players including one that I knew well from my playing days). I did not have much interaction with her but I remember her being helpful.

The question for me is who starts with Gneiting at MB? I think it will be the winner of the Kate Prior/Bri Albright duel. It is possible that Llarenas starts some early matches, IMO, as a nod to her loyalty and decision to return and give more depth and perhaps to give the underclassmen a little more time, but I do not believe barring injuries that she Llarenas sees any more playing time down the stretch next year than she did this year. I was impressed with what I saw from Albright, and think she is going to be good for BYU. That said, my guess is that Prior is too good to keep out of the lineup and that she would start the rotation with Gneiting. Do you see it differently?

As I recall, Albright was a very imposing presence at the net, though I'm basing that just on the blue/white scrimmage, so who knows how much she's developed in the last year or how much of an impact Prior can make immediately.
