BYU set the all-time attendance record tonight in their win over Duke (previously, it was the 2018 match against Utah after they ascended to No. 1 in the polls). When I got there about 5 minutes before 7:00, there was a line of students out about 2/3 the length of RB. I bet lots of those didn't even get in.
I've seen people say online that 1000+ fans were turned away. I'm really surprised that the attendance was so strong for this match so early in the season. The fact that the soccer team (perennially one of the leaders in the nation in attendance) was on the road tonight probably helped. Edit: People online are saying that all the incoming freshmen at new student orientation were invited to the match. That makes sense.

And, cripes, that epic 2nd round match versus Utah last fall seemed like it was sardine packed in, from the video!

And, cripes, that epic 2nd round match versus Utah last fall seemed like it was sardine packed in, from the video! Yeah. Here are the previous highs, all from 2018. I was at the previous record, as I bought my ticket as soon as I saw the results and realized that BYU was very, very likely to ascend to the top of the polls that week, and a home match against Utah under those circumstances would likely be a record crowd.

I am hoping Elaine Michaelis is still doing well! A former player here told me she was slowing down physically, but still sharp mentally, last fall, so she could appreciate that NCAA tournament match last fall was a continuation of what she did to build! She always took the high road! I am a Wisconsin fan, but I will never forget what a giant she was for the sport I love and women's sports in general!

It’s a great atmosphere (if you actually get a seat), but it’s really quite a mess the way they handle it. I was also at that Utah match, and it was absolutely crazy. They let in too many students and there was nowhere for all the non-students to sit, nor was there really room for all the students either. The entire aisle to my left had people standing and/or sitting in it. It was like a mob seen outside too. I have no idea how that was less than tonight’s match, as there were people in the aisles behind me, but not all the way down. This time it seemed as if the entire top section was filled with students, which didn’t happen last time, so maybe they squeezed in more. Of course I used to experience this with the men’s matches, so it’s nothing new.

Yep, the atmosphere can be great, but it's a terrible venue in so may ways.

At least they made the seats a bit nicer. There aren't really any alternatives. The Marriott Center would be a huge mistake in my view. Way too big.

Point you to my comments on allowing her to join the team and not invite a younger setter with good upside to walk on. I mean, I was more criticizing the ref for being super strict with double calls during an intrasquad scrimmage. It's not the Final Four. Yea I know. But you have to understand that the refs all take their orders from the coaching staff's in these scrimmages. The coaches want the match called closely ..... that's what will happen. If not, then the refs don't make a peep except for the obvious.

I am sure there are plenty of people that like the new seats better, but I don't. The new seats are smaller in terms of width. In Section B, I think they were able to squeeze out 3-4 more seats per row. It's noticeable. Also, the cupholders reduce leg room. I prefer the old wood seats by quite a bit. So does my wife, and she's quite small.

Marnvbc2 likes to disguise himself as a San Diegan but he acts more like a disgruntled V 17s 2nd team libero’s Dad whose daughter wasn’t recruited by BYU & never made a Club V top team. He mingles nuggets of truth with a whole bunch of nonsense to establish his credibility. His underlying purpose seems to be to plant seeds of doubt about BYU‘s future Libero/DS recruits & in a subtle way bring attention to his daughter & her team. It's laughable that he questions Miller's athleticism! Nailed it! Funny, I have said that the lack of athletic ability on the backrow is hurting BYU and if you are living under a rock (which you might be), you might not know that. Or you can close your eyes while watching them so you don't have to see it. I Don't have any kids in Utah nor have they ever played in a Utah club. My purpose is to "mingle nuggets of truth with a whole bunch of nonsense" is a great statement especially if you give us all the nonsense I have used to establish credibility. That doesn't even make sense. Please also explain how I have brought attention to the mystery daughter and her "team" .... which team? Miller isn't a great athlete, nor is any Club V L off either of their top 17 teams (which would include my mysterious daughter that only you know about) and because some were wanting me to name a few players who could play backrow for BYU, I did name a couple. Almost immediately 2 of them (including the mysterious "daughter") were invited onto D-1 rosters. I simply stayed in Utah to pick a couple of players that BYU could easily see without traveling AND the girls would be upgrades to their recruiting class. Miller will not be a big time answer to the L problem at the Y. I also said that V has a girl who could be an elite L on their 16 team. You must have missed that since you are preoccupied with my unnamed "nonsense" and worrying bout top or 2nd teams from clubs rather than BYU's backrow. I don't care who V thinks should be on their top, 2nd or 3rd teams. Frankly, they did a good job qualifying multiple teams in the open division, but if they would have put the top talent all on one team, they would have won a national championship with a coach who really wanted to. But politics are difficult to avoid particularly when you put together teams based in large part on potentially getting players scholly's rather than winning matches in open divisions. I probably should direct my comments about L's and V to the L who was hurt at nationals. She is the most athletic L in the V 17's but I have heard that she is a school problem. She also flops a lot but as far as outright skill she is better than all the 17 L's, including my mystery daughter. BYU needs to go get the 16 DS/OH. She will blossom with good coaching.

There are some opportunities for improvement on BYU’s backrow. I believe many on this forum know that. See— I’m not living under a rock; I do agree with you on “some nuggets of truth”. However, the season is just getting started and it’s only fair to give the newcomers a chance to prove their value. One doesn’t have to be a data scientist to look at your past posts and see some trends: 1. You love to take swings at Heather. 2. You're an avid critic of the Bowers. 3. You like to gossip way too much about V’s top 17's team and put in plugs for the 17s - 2nd team. I get it - you’re entitled to your opinions. But, if you don’t want people in this forum to suspect you are a jaded parent, whose kid BYU didn’t go after, then it might serve you well to start a Club V thread somewhere else because many of us here find your “suspected” Club V agenda quite boring. Now, let's get this forum back to what it was meant to be. Go Cougs!
