The ref has called three doubles, all on Taylor, in the last 10 points or so. In a scrimmage. Point you to my comments on allowing her to join the team and not invite a younger setter with good upside to walk on.

I mean, I was more criticizing the ref for being super strict with double calls during an intrasquad scrimmage. It's not the Final Four.

Interesting to read these reports, albeit I am late to the match on this one. If Dayton is the Libero all BYU fans will be in for a long year. Knudsen will have to be way better at serve receive than the scrimmage showed. E Bower can hit at a decent level but she is vertically challenged in blocking and getting her hits over average to above average blockers. She can hit the ball with power, but the question will be if she can hit around or through blockers. There will be some very "loud" blocks against her this year if she starts. Will Heather start her? I won't surprise me if that happens. Interesting stats on hitting percentages. The MB's will have to carry this team and keep defenses off Livingston. Grimmer is a super competitor but can she block big OH's? I don't think so at the elite level. We will see what happens against Ryder, Duke and WSU. I think WSU will be a good match for both clubs.

The touch height is way over blown. Timing is everything in vb. High jumpers only mean much when they can actually jump more than a ball height over their blocker, which is very very infrequent. The measurement for jump touch is not standardized and therefore you will continue to be frustrated in finding out the info. BYU takes measurements at the end of the day at camps and depending on the competition and number of jumps that day ..... they will get very inaccurate stats. W Bower has excellent timing but not great vertical. So, timing is what is really important. I am holding my breath but I agree with bbg95 that this passing roster could be trouble for BYU. On paper they are worse than last year. Why aren't they putting some walk on's onto the practice floor and allowing the oldest Bower sister to leave the program? Dayton too .... and probably others also. Like I have complained about ever since Heather was hired .... BYU needs to recruit great athletes .... and teach them more fundamentals. Knutsen is simply not an athlete. This is also what worries me about the 2023 class and Miller off the V team. Not an athlete but she appears to be a better passer than the average BYU recruit.

Marnvbc2 likes to disguise himself as a San Diegan but he acts more like a disgruntled V 17s 2nd team libero’s Dad whose daughter wasn’t recruited by BYU & never made a Club V top team. He mingles nuggets of truth with a whole bunch of nonsense to establish his credibility. His underlying purpose seems to be to plant seeds of doubt about BYU‘s future Libero/DS recruits & in a subtle way bring attention to his daughter & her team. It's laughable that he questions Miller's athleticism!

Jarom mentioned that Kenzie Koerber will be doing sideline reporting this season.

Jarom mentioned that Kenzie Koerber will be doing sideline reporting this season. Make sense. I believe she's going to school for sports broadcasting.

Yes, I am absolutely craving info on touch (not necessarily verticals). For some reason I can't get it to play on my phone. No, even though I was initially critical of Whitney as a freshman, I have become a fan. And, knowing H. Olmstead the way I do (or think I do), she is 100% her kind of player.
Your first touch stat of the season. Amy Gant said that Livingston is no touching close to 10-7.

I must have missed her saying that, but that's pretty good. For reference, RJP's max touch height in college was 10-8.

I was at the match so I am watching a bit of it now. She said it after Livingston's first kill.

I missed this earlier, but Darnell Dickson of the Provo Herald wrote a season preview that was published this morning. It's pretty good overall, though he doesn't seem quite as knowledgeable as he usually is. He referred to Whitney Bower as a "terrific blocker" (lol) and seems to think there is a wide open competition for the opposite job. Even worse, he said that Madi Allen transferred to Washington, not San Diego. That's a pretty embarrassing mistake.

BYU set the all-time attendance record tonight in their win over Duke (previously, it was the 2018 match against Utah after they ascended to No. 1 in the polls). That is about as packed as the Smith Fieldhouse can get. If it was a larger venue, the attendance might have approached 7000.

When I got there about 5 minutes before 7:00, there was a line of students out about 2/3 the length of RB. I bet lots of those didn't even get in. The reserved section had plenty empty seats (the change starting last year in how the do season tickets I think has led to more empty seats in the reserved sections even though that section is sold out).

I've seen people say online that 1000+ fans were turned away. I'm really surprised that the attendance was so strong for this match so early in the season. The fact that the soccer team (perennially one of the leaders in the nation in attendance) was on the road tonight probably helped. Edit: People online are saying that all the incoming freshmen at new student orientation were invited to the match. That makes sense.
