Erin Livingston and Eden Bower are the ones that look like sisters. Got them mixed up in the social media stuff.

It's not too often that a player like Grimmer who barely played and wasn't injured the previous year is pre-season all-conference, but she deserves it.

I don't think Grimmer should be listed - not because she isn't as good as the others who made the team, but because we haven't seen much of her at all in over a year and you can't really judge how good someone is when they've sat out for that long. Still excited to see her play though

There's no real reason to think that she isn't still good. She's not coming off a major injury or something. She just wasn't as good as the other opposite on the team last year. Frankly, I also think it's a bit dumb that transfers are ineligible for the preseason all-conference team. I wouldn't have minded if Blossom made it.

Again, not because I don't think she's great but just because we haven't really seen her play in a while. I think Blossom would have definitely made it if transfers were eligible. I wonder if Allen was considered, as she is a transfer within the WCC (not sure if that matters or if all transfers are not allowed on the list).

The thing about Allen is that it sounds like she will be a DS rather than a libero. I believe Benbow still has that job. That's a good question, though. I'm not sure if the WCC allows for intra-conference transfers to be listed. I would guess they probably do, but I can't really say.

Whitney Bower is making an appearance on BYUSN this morning. Fingers crossed that the hosts ask better questions this time.

Here's the interview with Whitney Bower on BYUSN: They did a much better job with the questions this time, even asking about the passing for a couple minutes. Bower praised her passers (she's a good leader, so I'm not surprised by this, but I'll believe the passing has improved when I see it). Also, mintonetteman, she said everyone's verticals have shot up. Bower is a personable player, so that makes the job of the interviewers much easier, but I'll give them credit for being better prepared.

This was a better interview, but there seems to be this weird idea that BYU only lost to Pittsburgh last year, as though they can't distinguish between Pitt and Purdue. Granted the match was played at Pittsburgh, but still, they cannot seem to figure out who it was that BYU lost to in the Sweet 16.

Granted the match was played at Pittsburgh, but still, they cannot seem to figure out who it was that BYU lost to in the Sweet 16. Yeah, they also kept saying that BYU is ranked No. 9 when they're actually No. 10 (they finished last season at No. 9). There were a few mistakes, but considering what a disappointment the interviews with Livingston and Hyte were, I'll give the hosts credit for their improvement. I've been waiting all offseason for them to ask about the passing, and they finally did it, even if Bower didn't say anything that I wouldn't have expected her to. A setter throwing her passers under the bus is kind of like a quarterback throwing his offensive line under the bus. It's a bad look, even if they're right. Bower is too smart for that.

Yes, I am absolutely craving info on touch (not necessarily verticals). For some reason I can't get it to play on my phone. No, even though I was initially critical of Whitney as a freshman, I have become a fan. And, knowing H. Olmstead the way I do (or think I do), she is 100% her kind of player.

Well, if the verticals have improved, wouldn't their touches also be higher because they're still the same height with the same standing reach?

Snuka will be working with setters at BYU. Heather has no real deep knowledge of setting technique although she is very opinionated on the position. She has a background in defense and played L/DS at Utah St for a very average program. Now don't let that comment set off the defensive mechanisms for some of you blue goggled supporters, because I admit that some really elite players are not good coaches. Some physically average players are excellent coaches. Heather knows a lot about most aspects of the game but she isn't a top coach of setters. I think this hire/placement is an excellent move by Heather if she can allow another set of eyes to be as important as her own opinions. I think her complete frustration in the DS/L dept coupled with the setter issues/responsibilities was too much for her to deal with and be successful at an elite level. She decided to refocus, by delegation IMO. Feedback I got from campers and their moms (regular camp and position camp) was that they wanted W. Bower not Snuka to work with their daughters. Maybe Snuka doesn't feel comfortable in her role yet. Getting the feeling she may be a Hawaii recruiting asset more than an actual coach. That volunteer assistant role is an "interesting" position at BYU--and that is based a friends first hand experience. BYU is like almost all colleges at summer camps. They assign players they are interested in to certain courts and who the girls and there mom's want them working with isn't a factor. There will be some shifting of campers around to different courts depending on skill levels or to get a better look at a specific player.

The new rules regarding setting are to eliminate the "double" call on second contact but I think the NCAA only allowed this to be experimented with in the spring games, which are over and BYU didn't participate in. I have always felt that a double contact on the second ball doesn't give any advantage to the team who does it. If you eliminate that call, it would benefit the very athletic and strong setters and allow them to make the game more challenging and dynamic. Bower would be benefited from such a rule change as would the sport. Who cares if the ball has movement on it, placement is much more important. If the ball has too much movement it would be a detriment to the team who makes the double contact. My thoughts ...
