Pretty sure BYU's 70% acceptance rate would be much higher if not for the fact that there are more LDS kids than there are spaces available each year. Not sure there is realistically much of a standard for admission. Acceptance rate isn't really the best metric. The average ACT score is 29 (91st percentile), and the average high school GPA is 3.86. Neither of those are great metrics either.

Very strange. No one but staff and family would have gone to the Duke-Rider game anyway.

I’m an alumni, LDS, former VB player. Just want to say I am appalled and embarrassed. I have emailed the athletic department asking that student section seating to be removed permanently. I’m so sorry this happened to this girl. No excuses. Honor- Courage!! Thank you! I’m the field house now and pleased to say that that student section is empty, no risers, and the cheerleaders are there instead.

Wasn't at all my intention to start this discussion, but there's a lot to be said for homeschooling and the LDS' relationship to "science". Incredible that someone scoring in the 30's on the ACT also somehow has never been taught about cells and learned about sexual reproduction and evolution two years after college.* * This person did not study sciences at BYU, so I am sure those classes cover those things, but it's a real example of a friend of mine in NYC. I also recommend "Educated" by Tara Westover which covers her life growing up fundamental LDS and attending BYU. The person wasn't a student at BYU. Just wanted to repeat that, in case we keep going down a rabbit hole regarding BYU's unique student body and their overarching guiding principles as an institution of higher education. Do we really believe it was a single student?

No, it comes from a desire to make sure that people understand that there has yet to be any evidence located or presented. So the player made it up? Nice try.

Acual evidence, you know, like statements from people who actually witnessed the alleged events. Photographs, video, documents. Actual evidence comes in various forms. Rumors, innuendo, hearsay, etc are not evidence. Have you rewatched the match looking for evidence? Evidence would be nice. But remember 98% of people in the stands near the players were students. Any video, if available, would come from BYU. I would trust security to review bot would not expect students to turn in others.

Also there were at least one police officer (Provo police, not campus police), Duke staff, BYU staff and security, and Duke teammates. I wonder what if anything they heard? Again, this is why I always suggest letting a full investigation take place before making conclusions. Everyone here wants to attack me, because they have concluded it happened. I have not reached a conclusion one way or the other. I do not know. As far as I can tell, no one on this forum knows either.

Multiple credible national media reports show that BYU has banned a non student who was in the student section, so clearly there is some truth to the reports. I hope it was an isolated incident, but, while it would be hard as a student, BYU is a faith based institution which has an Honor Code and holds its students to a higher code of conduct than most universities. I would hope, given that, at least someone hearing a racial slur in the student section would have immediately gone to ushers and reported it, which someone may have, since the person is now banned.

I'm pleased BYU removed that student section; I've always thought it would be a good idea to get rid of it.

💪🏽💪🏽Right on : Duke should have walked off floor and refused to play unless fan(s) arrested and removed. Duke team should have walked out! And any other teams scheduled at BYU should CANCEL. The WCC also needs to do something. Barring fans from attending, something. Behavior like this absolutely CANNOT go unpunished. I know it’s not the girls fault, but the ncaa needs to ban fans from BYU, suspend their home games, suspend their season. Something. BYU cannot go unpunished WahineFan44 - be careful and don't participate in reverse racism. You lose credibility when you say stuff like you have. This was a one person event that shouldn't have happened. I am not a blind BYU supporter but know enough to understand that BYU doesn't promote racism or the kind of behavior that apparently when on at the match. Most colleges with student populations have issues on a regular basis that aren't appropriate and need to be dealt with. BYU or Duke or WSU would deal with this type of issue swiftly. Your call for banning all students and canceling matches/games is way over the top and doesn't do any good for the thousands in attendance who did nothing wrong. BYU cleared out the student section for the WSU match and even moved their cheerleaders when asked to by WSU. The schools appear to take sportsmanship seriously and I am confident that the facts will be hammered out and punishment will be put on the correct person(s) while not nailing an entire innocent arena of fans for the stupid act(s) of what looks to be one guy. Hawaii shouldn't throw stones when they live in glass houses.

The fan identified and banned. Wasn't a BYU student. Are we to believe it was just one person? BYU has a history of poor student behavior. Sounds more like deflecting rather than accepting any responsibility to fix. I want to see the NCAA and maybe AVCA step in in some fashion to prevent such things from happening. Programs need to be punished in some way if such behavior persists. That would shift the calculation for universities and programs away from fear of stirring the pot and toward doing something about such problems proactively. It would motivate student bodies as well, and perhaps bystanders. It's terrible that a student athlete has to summon a police officer for protection in a match, particularly on account of fear of racial violence. You can't simply ignore the history behind that threat in this country and it should have no part in the sport. I have spoken to a rep in the athletic dept and the statement that a police officer was summoned to protect a player in the match is just false. There seems to a lot more to the story than what this blog is bringing up. There will be serious consequences for any wrong-doer but there is No way that the NCAA or the AVCA can prevent things from happening before they actually happen. People have freedom to speak in this country but they also have to face the consequences of what they say .... usually.
