I don't have any information on practice competition at all. What I do know is that if you watched Rose at PSU, Cook at Neb, Hambly at Stanford, McCutcheon at Minn, and Sheffield at Wisc ..... and a few of the other top coaches/programs you will see many more OH's, MB's and sometimes even setters playing throughout the early 10 preseason matches so that players can be evaluated where it counts most, in a match with match pressure on them. No great coach is satisfied with only practice observations. This an issue that BYU could develop and needs to develop. It goes against the way things have been done in Heather's tenure but she could easily change it up and that aspect would help make sure that players know what their status is. It helps coaches not make mistakes or have too much or too little confidence in reserve players. It is a big deal. I think that Prior, now that they have wasted her red shirt year (I totally disagreed with that move) needs to have playing time. I also believe that Callahan needs time on the OH. She has a bit more vertical and rotational quickness than Stowell. Can she compete with Bower? I think she can but it will be a close call and I am not saying that Bower shouldn't be the starting OH2. Billeter on the backrow and Morevec hitting in a set here or there? Taylor is a roster spot waste, but we do need to see Decker play. She needs 1 set for 3 or 4 matches in a row. Dayton, M Clinger, and Taylor, shouldn't be on the roster but they are, so hopefully they won't be next season. Some good teams will put pressure on BYU which will help address weaknesses but we will also learn positive surprises about a player or two. What you say about that list of coaches is not correct. "No great coach is satisfied with only practice information." Some are. Some in your list have in some seasons done what you say -- given lots of players chances to perform in matches early on as they sort out their lineups. All of them in some seasons have done literally none of that. The lineup has been set from match one based entirely on practice observations. Two of those coaches and programs i know very well. When there is close in the gym competition, revealing a deep roster of talent, yes, lots of players play at least early on. In years with little or no competition, the starting lineup is set early and pleas from fans to "show us the backups in real matches" are of course ignored. My understanding is that's what is going on at BYU this year. Maybe you can adjust your understanding a little about there being no serious competition on the BYU roster this season. If there wasn't close competition why would Callahan replace E Bower in the rotation when things were struggling a bit? I will hand it to Heather, she subbed players into the match way more frequently this last weekend than she ever has. It was healthy and will lead to good things for BYU. The loss to Pitt will be far better for this team than playing bad teams. It is likely that BYU will lose another match this coming weekend. That is alright. It will be a great teaching experience and bring some things to the table that normally wouldn't be visited in a 30-1 season. This tough schedule will make BYU a much better team than they would be otherwise.

Additionally, I'm SO GLAD that Texas is leaving this %*$#ty conference when BYU joins. The last thing this conference needs is more religious affiliations from people who see themselves as more righteous than the rest. Good riddance. Thanks for exposing your views on this topic! Texas isn't actually leaving the conference when BYU and the other 3 schools join it. Too bad you don't like Baylor and TCU because of their religious views. Can you see any problem with your line of thinking .... probably not, but most of us can. TCU has no affiliation with any church, they disaffiliated long ago. Baylor can kick rocks. Simply being a "religious" school doesn't make anyone good or better than anyone else. That's what some of y'all can't seem to get into your minds. It also doesn't shield you from legitimate, social criticisms. If the UT administration gets their way, they'll be leaving this conference ASAP, which I'm 100% supportive of. While would I ever want to be affiliated with an entity that considered someone like myself an abomination up until recently? Lol you can kick rocks as well

Actually... I liked the wrong post. I meant to like Marn's not this one. This one is ridiculous and looking for the bad more than anything else. Agree with MARN, not always... but for this one for sure.

My understanding is that's what is going on at BYU this year. Clearly based on what is going on during the last couple of matches your understanding is wrong. Heather never has allowed much substituting in her head coaching career. But, she is branching out and doing just that these last few matches. I think she is headed in the right direction. She is unsettled at Opp and OH (2) and some of her DS possibilities. And she is bringing girls off the bench. I wish we could see Montoya at Opp. She has the physical skills to excel at OH. Dan Fisher loves a 6-2 and I don't think he will be hugely successful until he changes that mindset. He has the athletes to run a 5-1. Heather loves a 5-1 and she doesn't have the athletes to run it successfully at an elite level. If you could mesh the 2 programs both coaches could compete for national championships. Have you watch LBSU this year? You tell me who is the better setter, Bower or Meyer, the girl who wasn't given a chance at BYU? Meyer is next level. Excellent blocker, really good athlete and brings more offense at the correct time than just about any setter in the NCAA's. She will be an All-American before her career is over.

I had not watched Eden Bower in person (still have not), but on television, I have not seen a more impressive volleyball body. I had no idea how long she was or what she touches (I really want to know this). But, on the replays, it was pretty clear she was an impressively high block. Actually played better against the bigger WSU block which I thought was a good sign. She has a long way to go, but if I am BYU it makes all the sense in the world to spend considerable time developing her. Also, I was very interested to see how she passed when she was in serve recieve -- she actually looked pretty good. Totally agree with this, and I've seen her in person three times now. She is very long, moves well, and I think adjust to sets well. Yes, she doesn't jump well, but she seems quite athletic in other ways. Like you, I was impressed by her passing. She's only passing in the one rotation, but teams did target her and she has looked pretty good. That doesn't mean she hold up if she was a consistent target for multiple rotations, but it's encouraging. E Bower struggles against good blockers and her wind up motion is a slow windmill. She is powerful but methodical and slow. While her ball doesn't have height she can play with a fast tempo. Her lack of hops combined with a lack lateral quickness is concerning a many levels. The knock on E Bower by most top coaches has always been her defense. She has had a couple of decent matches in the passing dept but against teams with time to scout and target her with Elite level players, she hasn't held up. Livingston has become a much better passer over the last 2 years but she has the athletic ability to improve her skills because of her ability to move quickly. We will see if OSU presents the same problem for E Bower as Pitt and Georgia Tech did. Callahan needs to play a little more to give her a fair shot and I really want to see Montoya placed out on the pin. Stowell is history in my mind. She is a smaller version of E Bower and she will never over take Eden. We have no idea what passing abilities rest in the players that haven't seen the floor, but Heather better try them out if they have any glimpse of athletic ability because the back row is at a 3 alarm fire right now and about to go up on smoke. Still I give Heather credit for taking these early tests to give the program a work regime for the rest of the season. It wasn't as if she would be able to hide the deficiency's by avoiding top competition until the tourney begins. Like last year and the year before. This stretch of matches is excellent for the program.

What institution has considered someone like you an abomination? UT will get hammered in most sports in the SEC. They are the most monied athletic program in the country with the lowest return on investment (except vb) in the nation. Either you are educated enough to look at the facts (not unproven emotions) of a situation or you will forever be running around calling everything that goes against you in life (racism). It isn't! You are missing huge opportunities to make the world a better place by blaming people for your lot in life. Pick yourself up, be nice to everyone and get to work! TX will be with the 4 new comers for probably 2 years before they can afford to leave for the SEC. It will probably be a great B12 league and just as good as the SEC for those 2 years.

Not just the state, or the conference, the NATION. No one is running around "calling everything that goes against you in life racism." I get that saying that somehow helps your weak argument that you're trying to make but how can I even respond when you're just responding with feelings and emotion. Facts don't care about feelings! But you keep doing you and I'll keep doing me. I'm sure if you're "good" Mormon, you'll be rewarded with your own celestial planet and several wives! Good luck!

eotexas5 - you ought to take the time to read what ESPN just released from BYU regarding a statement that addresses the Duke vb players accusations of racial slurs being directed at her throughout the match. I think it speaks volume's to the issue we are facing in this country. Everyone should stand against racism towards any skin color, race, religion, or beliefs. Any group who is targeted or disparaged needs to be supported and lifted up by the rest of us. Making false accusations against any group sets back the progress of society in a big way. People who may be racist look for that kind of behavior (falsely pointing out injustice or racial slurs) to point out why they feel the way they feel. They are absolutely wrong. But why provide ammo? Nevertheless we need to be able to face bad actors and poor decisions together as a society. As much as we should condemn racial slurs or bigots' actions, we also have to condemn false accusations particularly when it comes from racist comments that aren't true. Martin Luther King was a great example and got a lot done in this country towards doing things the right way between the races. We even elected a black president while only 13% of the country is black. He was voted for by a lot of people who aren't black. We need more people like MLK and less Smolletts who try to get ahead by putting others down and lying about supposed racism. For BYU to be thrown under the bus is amazing because of any religion (I am not saying they are right about their religious beliefs) in this country, they send out missionaries by the thousands all over the world including into African countries and to people of all races, colors and backgrounds. It would make zero sense to claim that they are a racially biased school. I think they speak more languages on that campus than any other college in the USA and maybe the world. Your comments show that you don't understand that TCU is a Christian based school. That is contained in the name of the school ..... you know that right? No one on this thread has said that being a religious based school makes them better than other schools or people. You are the only one saying that. Again you lose credibility when you make remarks that are not supported by anything except your emotional outbursts.

Per dollar spent on athletics, UT doesn't perform well in basketball or football most years. Thank heavens for men's and women's swimming and diving and the track and field programs. Major sports .... waste of money and minor sports with minor spectators, very good performance! Congrats on winning the directors cup. Will say that I love Texas vb! Glad they are starting beach.

Hey, 6 to 7 roster spots could include a second tier Club V libero...great idea. Mintonetteman, I didn't realize you are a Club V coach also, but probably should have caught on with your preoccupation with "touch"! Go back to your new account. Anyway, don't you think BYU could do better than a second tier libero? Probably.

Even when I played at BYU, BYU has been preoccupied with statistics and metrics. You may of heard of this guy named Carl McGown. I think he was some Olympic guy. He kind of had this think for stats that has influenced the sport of volleyball. Approach touch, kind of important when evaluating potential of hitters and matchups. I actually give Club V props for pushing out this metric. Like any club, Club V has it flaws, but I think attention to certain metrics is a good thing for a club to do.
