Remember that Rio match when Serbia absolutely destroyed Russia? In any case, 4th place would be a disappointment, Russia always try to aim for a medal spot. The reason Russia was bad in 2016 was because Startseva was left off the roster and was replaced by Pankova. This happened literally between the WGP finals and the start of the OG. If you have a team that runs a two player passing system and is STILL bad at ball control, you need a setter who is physical enough to put up hittable moon balls the Russian's are used to. Russia's coach Yuri Marichev was a joke. That too, strange roster changes. I remember Karpol criticizing the roster choices of Marichev immediately after Rio. That plus the fact Russia didn't play much leading to Rio lead to their under-performance. Not playing the WGP with the new roster was a terrible strategy in hindsight.

South Korea will participate. The assistant coach will be in charge of training until Lavarini returns and finishes his quarantine.
Korea will have the difficult task of finding players that can replace the former twins starting roles.

Not yet, but assuming national teams that are getting together makes me think they're participating for sure. It also helps when coaches say that they're training for VNL.

I’d bet good money that the only team to skip will be Serbia. Even if Lang Ping doesn’t bring her A team with some youth (I still think she will), she’ll definitely send a younger/B team. Every other nation will be wanting to clear up some roster spots and/or get competitive matches in as a team.

China will be ending their training in about a week or so then players will head back to their clubs for their National Games Preliminaries. It's only a week long, but once that is over and they resume NT training we can get a better idea of what roster Lang Ping will send based off players being called/not called. China also has a test match at the Olympic venue with the Japanese NT the first week of May, but I don't think that will be a priority for her.

Ze Roberto will announce his first calls this week from players on teams that have already been eliminated in the Superliga. Training will begin on April 5 for the players that are ready. The goal is to have list complete by the ending of next week once the championship is over. Seems like the planning is set and if all goes well they will travel to Italy on May 21. https://www.instagram.com/p/CNAOg8grLlF

They’re not sending a team. EDIT: JUST A RUMOR

They’re not sending a team. No no. I don't claim that. Someone else posted the rumor. I think all teams should participate unless there is a medical/safety reason they feel is necessary to boycott. And, if they do boycott, and they are a core team, they should lose that status and have to either get it back somehow or pay a fine.

Apparently Serbia is just a rumor? Idk. At this moment, we should assume all teams are participating until we hear otherwise. Most of the talk on this thread on this subject is just pure speculation at this time. Rumors are popping up in various international volleyball news sources.

However FIVB did say not all 16 teams have said they are going to join the bubble in Italy.
