Report: McCormick leaves Husker volleyball team
Amanda McCormick, the Huskers' starting libero for the entire 2004 season, appears set to leave the Nebraska volleyball team.
According to a report on KLKN-TV, McCormick, who first told friends last month she was considering leaving the program, will transfer to another school.
McCormick did not immediately return a phone message left by the Journal Star on Tuesday night.
Reached by telephone Tuesday, Nebraska head coach John Cook said he was under the impression that a decision wouldn't be made until the end of the semester.
McCormick underwent shoulder surgery immediately following the season and wasn't expected to participate in offseason conditioning or spring practice.
"She's focused on getting better and on her schoolwork," said Cook, adding that McCormick has not yet asked to be released from her scholarship.
Cook said that the two last spoke about a week ago.
A co-captain in 2004, McCormick set Nebraska's single-season school record for digs, ranking second in the Big 12 in digs per game.
McCormick would be the second player to leave the program since Nebraska lost to Southern California in the finals of the Louisville Regional in December. Following the loss, Cook said that Nebraska needed to improve at the libero position in order to make it to the final four next season.
There are currently no other liberos listed on Nebraska's roster. However, three-year starting outside hitter Jennifer Saleaumua has been mentioned as a candidate to switch to the libero spot.
Rachel Schwartz, a senior at Lincoln East, has said she plans to play the position at Nebraska beginning next season, but as a recruited walk-on has not signed a letter-of-intent with the Huskers.
