Don't panic just yet. But I still believe San Diego needs to win just one more match to make the NCAA Tournament. They'll have to do it at BYU or vs. Pepperdine unless they have a miracle recovery today. 5 straight losses incl. one to LMU with no significant victories is not at-large worthy. What do you think the expected seeding for BYU looks like if they beat USD on Saturday and win their other 4 matches? 12ish?
Not really sure. It depends on what happens with everyone else, of course. Not sure how much respect the WCC gets from the committee. Had Pepperdine beat Baylor, we probably could see two WCC teams seeded. We still theoretically can, not sure if it happens.

USD is is disarray, I don't think they have has a full team in one match this year. Today they had to put freshman Pries at Middle, that is not her position. They also missed Tastad, their passing and setting were awful BYU doubled both pins as the middle attach is non-existent. I expect Lukes and Frohling to have much better matches on Saturday. Not sure why Fayad sees the court. Urgency is at an all time high the next 3 matches.

We'll see how San Diego responds on Saturday and against Pepperdine, but I always thought replacing Newsome at setter was going to be a real challenge. I was surprised at how many people were just awarding them the WCC title before the season started. I thought they'd be the favorite too, but still.

LMU converted an Opposite to MB in the middle of a match at the beginning of the season, and she's gradually improved through the season. I don't think she had ever played middle. Santa Clara took a freshman OH/DS and threw her "in the middle", but they've actually done a complex blocking scheme, where one of the experienced pin players always blocks in the middle, and they are having their pins attacking in the middle, running 2's, rather than try to teach a small OH to hit quicks. It's pretty nontraditional, but has worked better than having an empty net in the middle... Stanford has also been improvising at the MB position this season. It's a weird year. As for San Diego's backcourt...they are only missing Tastad. All of the pin hitters and their returning libero are available. But I did think Tastad was playing really well this year and they are clearly missing her. The question is, are Tastad and Turner coming back quickly? It could make all the difference.

A lot of people are talking about Tastad. She was passing a 42.5% good pass this year. That would not have made the difference today.

Because they seem to basically have the same backcourt personnel as last season, when they weren't struggling so much.

Totally agree with you on the USD setters, wildly inconsistent, Frohling and Lukes rarely got a hittable ball and they were setting the middles inches below the net. Not sure why Madill gets such a quick hook.

I don't remember San Diego's passing that well from last season, but they did have an excellent setter, which really helps.

But as bbg95 said, the setting is the biggest difference.

In hindsight, Petrie should have probably redshirted Newsome her 1st year, and let Gengenbacher run the offense all by herself for 2 years full time.
Madill looked like she was doing well at the beginning of the season, but her location is still just not good enough. Her and Frohling have not been connecting at all, hence Frohling's lower numbers and stats this year.
