Tolman looks like a nice player to have on your bench. It looks like she's got a nice arm and gives BYU the option to go big at opposite. It will be interesting to see how she develops over the next few years.
But why burn her redshirt year this late in the season?

I think you could break your nose with that hard of contact...hope Fayad is OK. At 21-9, BYU starts putting subs into the match for experience. Doesn't look like USD will be ranked next week, or that anyone would choose them over Pepperdine in their final 2 matches... trojansc says they need to win one of those matches against Pepp to make the tournament. They have lost their last 3 matches now. I just don't see how you can justify a bid for San Diego at 11-5 with 5 straight losses. They won't have a win over anyone relevant, nobody above .500. Honestly, I don't think they should get in even if you change it to 12-4 and negate the loss to LMU. They have to beat BYU or Pepperdine to get a tournament bid. They're getting 3 chances at home, so they won't have any sympathy from me. USD isn't passing the eye test either.

I like when BYU uses Jarom Jordan and Amy Gant as the broadcast team. I wish they would use that team on the men's side as well Agree on Amy Gant. Hard disagree on Jarom Jordan. Spencer Linton is much better in my opinion. I'd love to see Gant on the men's games.

But why burn her redshirt year this late in the season? I assume because this is a free year if Tolman wants, right? So there is no point in redshirting anyone this year. Tolman did play earlier this year in the first Pepperdine match.

This BYU team looks SO much better than the first few matches of this season. They are really gelling. Yeah, they're really rounding into form. BYU is a very young team with only four upperclassmen, so I'm not too surprised.

Frohling has not been very good this season It's perplexing. She was an AA, and both the WCC and South Pacific Region Freshman of the Year last season. She had 2.67 kills/set hitting .267 when being set by Newsome. She's a 6'5 Opposite. Doesn't seem to be injured. It just seems like the current setters can't put a ball where she wants to swing. The setting has been wildly inconsistent, and she can't adjust...? She's getting a similar 2.77 kills/set this season, but only hitting .198 Yes, a lot of people underestimated the difficulty of replacing Newsome. Heather Gneiting also wasn't nearly as effective in 2019 as she was in 2018 when she was National Freshman of the Year, and I think that can be largely attributed to going from a first-team All-American setter to a 17-year-old true freshman. Granted, a very good 17-year-old true freshman, but still. At that point of their respective careers, LHE was just better.

BYU played well, can see they’re in a groove coming down the home stretch.
Re: Newsome, her stellar year running a 5-1 was as a senior - she had uninterrupted training/touches the year before. Covid interruptions are likely largely to blame for under performances in all positions and of course, with setting, where reps are key.
No doubt, Frohling benefited by Newsome. I don’t think it’s only set location with her though. Great players find a way to adjust. Hope she gets her mojo back.
Passing and team defence was also much better last year - can’t run an offence effectively without this. Benbow missing the first half of this season must be impacting her play. And Tastad has been out for a chunk now. Plus the rotating door with lineups hasn’t helped overall team defence. And let’s not even talk about the middle situation.
Disappointed in SD’s season - expected more - but maybe unrealistic with Covid. Also wondering how the change in coaching from Hilliard to Reft has impacted things.

USD looks lost, I believe a large reason is that they have been hit very hard by Covid this year, Lukes has only played in 6 of the 14 matches and Benbow 7.
I do see a direct correlation to Frohling and Lukes success before and after the setting change;
With Madill Lukes -USF.317, USF.300, LMU.545 Frohling- averaging .280
With Tercaiol Lukes -LMU.097, BYU.105, BYU.125 Frohling - LMU -.050., BYU.115, BYU -.222
The setting has been terrible the last 3 matches(passing hasn't helped)I don't get the setter change when the team was undefeated. It seems the coaching staff does something similar every year.
Team should be very good next year as long as they figure out the setting issues.
