Utah Valley University is making their first tournament appearance.
Texas State is appearing for the 12th time, having gone 6-34 (.150) in their previous sets played. The Bobcats defeated Rice 3-1 in 2018 in their lone match win in the tourney.

I am rooting for the Wolverines in this one.

Do you happen to know how many times they were matched up with Texas in the opening round. 2018 was the first time I can recall that Texas State wasn't matched up with a seeded time in the opening round. Appears to be a steadily improving program.

As Southwest Texas St. 1986 lost 1-3 to UT-Arlington 1991 lost 0-3 to Hawaii 1998 lost 1-3 to Illinois as Texas St: 2004 lost 0-3 to Texas 2005 lost 0-3 to Hawaii 2007 lost 0-3 to Texas 2009 lost 0-3 to Texas 2011 lost 0-3 to Texas 2013 lost 0-3 to Texas 2018 beat Rice 3-1, lost 0-3 to Texas 2019 lost 1-3 to UC-Santa Barbara

if not for the reduced number of participants-- probably would have happened again Most likely Texas State would have been a sub-regional #3 seed in a 64 team pool and wouldn't have played Texas in the first round if they were in that sub-regional. That has been Texas State's seed the last two years.
