From the Homecoming blog: "Diana Brown, Westerville, OH., is studying molecular and cellular biology, while also pursuing a minor in psychology. As a member of the Illinois women’s volleyball team and their liaison with the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, she strongly advocates for athletes’ voices to heard regarding mental health and social justice issues. Brown leads bible studies through St. John’s Catholic Newman Center and is a member of the Gamma of Illinois chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Eta Sigma honor society. Driven to be the change, she wishes to attend medical school after receiving a master’s degree here at Illinois."

Tough loss last night, Illini. I fell asleep early in set 4, so I missed the gory bits. Your pins are amazing. Looking forward to a rematch on Saturday. Hit me up if any of you are making the trek up I-39.

If you had told me two weeks ago that the Illini would go 1-3 against Purdue and Wisconsin, I'd have been pretty psyched. And even though the five set loss to Purdue at home feels like one we let slip away, the two losses to the Badgers are to be expected, as far as I'm concerned. They're a tough serving team with a lot of experienced weapons that have had our number of late, and the Illini still took a couple gritty sets off them.
So onward and upward. Let's get a good rebound against the Hawks at home on Wednesday night.

Good to see a few back row attacks from Raina against Iowa the other night. Another wrinkle that I think was new was that Diana set Nunge a couple times at the right pin in the rotation when she’s in front right for serve-receive.

Through the remainder of the schedule we SHOULD beat NW, Indiana 2x, Maryland, MSU and Rutgers, getting us to 10 conference wins and probably an invitation to the NCAA tournament, although Maryland’s win against Wisconsin gives me pause even though the match is in Champaign. I would hope we can beat MIchigan, tOSU and Minnesota at home. Reasonable? Any other reasonably winnable games or am I drinking the orange kool-aid?

I am not convinced that Illinois plays better at home than they do away.

Overall record of .500 or better is the basis for being eligible for the NCAA playoffs, not conference record.

I understand the NCAA only requires a winning record to be eligible. While a winning record overall is the NCAA eligibility minimum, simply having a winning record will not necessarily get us into the NCAA tourney. In 2016 we were 10-10 in conference and 17-14 overall but were not invited. In 2014 MSU was 11-9 in conference and 19-14 overall and were not invited. On the other hand, in 2010 Indiana was 9-11 in conference and 23-12 overall and were invited. Other than Indiana in 2010 I could not find another example of a B1G team having a losing record in conference and still making the tourney. There may have been others, but my attention span gave out while looking at the record books.

A winning record only qualifys to be looked at to be invited to the Big Dance. RPI is still the deciding factor.
