We better be careful. West Virginia swept Michigan this Season. The fact that W.Va. swept Michigan (-21 -19 -18) at a neutral site (Annapolis, Md.) in the 4th game of the season must have weighed heavily in the committee's putting them in the tourney. Illinois split with Michigan each team winning on their home court in 4 close sets (3-1). The other B1G team W.Va. played was Penn State in Morgantown. W.Va. The Mountaineers were 10-0 at the time and PSU swept them (-22 -13 -20) In the only match this season where Penn State and Illinois played was in State College and Illinois prevailed over the Lions (3-1) by scores of (20-25, -23, -25, -22) The committee claims to have watched a lot of volleyball matches to make some decisions. In their last 4 matches W.Va. lost twice to Texas Tech in Morgantown and won twice over TCU in Ft. Worth Should be a very good match between these two teams. |

I made a snap decision to buy all session tickets for the Kentucky Sub-regional yesterday morning. At my age I am always especially leery of driving long distances. Weather in December can always turn dicey in Illinois-Indiana-Kentucky. My husband has been making annual trips to Louisville for many years to attend the "Humana Festival of New Plays", and is encouraging me to make the drive to Louisville and on to Lexington which is another hour's drive away. I have been to UK once many years before to visit a good friend who had transferred from ISU into UK's School of Architecture. It will be a sentimental trip for me since that friend from St. Charles, Illinois, passed away from AIDS during the height of that epidemic.
Perhaps I can do my part in providing a little extra "mojo" for Illinois.

Really a huge honor for Cooney to be in that list of really exceptional players. Definitely a recognition of the improvement in her overall game this year, including her blocking and especially her passing in the back row. Not too many 6'4" back row passers to match what she has worked very hard to be able to do. Congrats.

We absolutely need help at DS. If Swanson and Whittington improve as much as Collins improved I’m not certain we need much help in the middle. Whether we need help at the pins depends on Holzman and Bruna’s health. Their injury history leads me to the conclusion we need help on the outside. Someone to teach service receive. Breanna Edwards is in the portal, but I don’t see her as an upgrade. Terry needs to get a better feel for the location of the sideline.

Barring any injuries or transfers, we should have six pin hitters and six middle hitters next year. I don’t see us adding any more hitters. Not sure if Kuper plans to return, but it would be great to pick up another DS.

I was just scrolling vballfreak808 ‘s twitter posts (awesome work, btw!) and saw that Rhett Robinson from North Texas is in the portal. I don’t have any insight into what the Illini will be looking for or any idea what the effective depth chart at the pins will be next season- but I’d be surprised if Tamas and co don’t reach out to her. They seem to place importance on having six rotation pins and Rhett did that for the Mean Green and she impressed at the Redbird Classic tournament at ISU in September. I think she made the all-tournament team. On top of being an impressive player, she seemed to bring positivity to the huddle and a leadership vibe. |
