What is the middle situation for Brazil? This may end up being their weakness in the end... they've always had a good 1/2 punch. I can't think of anyone to the level of the previous starting middles for the last 3 olympics.. I think Gattaz and Adenízia could be their best combo. This will be Ade's third Olympics. Mayany is young and needs to work on her offense but she is a VERY good blocker. Bia is probably going to get the third spot unless Carol over performs here.

Brazil's roster is pretty scary and we really don't know who will end up in Tokyo at several positions, let alone the who will be the starters.
Brazil, Turkey and the USA are the three teams I am going to be watching closely. I'll keep an eye on China (once their vets join) and Russia as well.
The "underdog" team I will be supporting is probably going to be Italy. I like a lot of the young players on their roster and I think they will make some noise.

I also love Kim Hill. I love Adams and Lowe. If they are capable of winning another medal for Team USA in the Olympics, then I would have supported them being at this tournament. Alas, I think that 2018 was a wake up call for the coaches. Several of the Rio vets were not cutting it, so now we are seeing a more willing investment in younger players. It is better that the team loses out on a medal while developing its future, then riding older veterans and achieving the same result. I agree long-term investment in new players for the next Olympic cycle can be a sound strategy. But then, that would mean foresaking the chance of getting on the podium for Tokyo. Does Karch really want that? He's not there to coach for the next round but also to get a medal in Tokyo. I suspect Karch will try to balance the two aims. He will still bring some Rio veterans (possibly including Kim Hill) to provide the experience and leadership to get into medal contention as well as newer players to give them experience for the next Olympics. I don’t think the Olympics is the place to invest in younger players for the purpose of experience. Only the best of the best should be there, and that means evaluating what each player brings to the table versus another player. That could mean bringing a player along because she provides leadership to the team (Erdem for Turkey, for example, but she’s also a very strong middle). It could also mean bringing a young, tall OPP for blocking purposes against Egonu or Bosko (Plummer, perhaps?). The players need to be looked at as a team unit and not individually necessarily. In other words, what makes for the strongest group to win. If younger players fit the bill, then by all means bring them (and the same is true for an older player, etc.). Usually, there is more time between Olympics and plenty of time to develop a roster for the next Olympics. There is also plenty of matches and club experience for these players to “develop”. I’m all in for medaling now as opposed to developing players for a future Olympics. Don’t put off tomorrow what you can do today - there may not be a Paris Olympics (or Tokyo Olympics)…you just never know. The exception to bringing youth for experience, is if your team doesn’t have a chance of winning anyways and you want to go all in for the next Games.

It doesn't matter what you and I think is the right strategy in the end. Its what Karch thinks that matters, no? And we will either praise or condemn him for the result.

Exactly. Karch is the one making the calls as to which players form a winning unit.
I don’t know how much USAV has a say in what the goal of the team is (e.g. mandating the development of the younger players), but I would think the roster selection is all Karch and his staff. The USAV would likely mandate goals for the next quad and the future (but entrust Karch or whoever the coach may be to meet those goals).

I've read all 129 pages of this thread and haven't commented yet but...I'm pumped for VNL to finally start tomorrow. When does the first grouping of active players get announced? Or has it been already?
