Y’all sleeping on Tijana if you don’t think she’s in the Zhu and Egonu tier. I don’t think she could singlehandedly beat China, Italy, or USA but if Serbia pushed a 5th set she could win that by herself behind the service line, kills, and even times she gets dug that result in free balls.

I think how the pools play out is really important. Getting second might be better than getting first or fourth for us last I checked. I'd much rather play Serbia in the semis than play China or Italy, which is what I projected.

I would love for a European team to wear the Olympic Crown. This is the first time in a while where I think that is a definite possibility. I still root for the USA full stop, but I think that several of us are a little relieved to see that Serbia might not be as dominant as they have been in the past. China, Italy and Serbia are still the top 3 IMO with USA nipping at their heels. I kind of like that USA isn't the top dog going into the OG. Less pressure that way. Not much less, but at least we don't have as big of a target on our backs unlike China. Everyone is going to be gunning to unseat the defending champions. They are going to try at least lol. China looked scary during the 2019 WC. I wonder if that was because the field of competition was low or if they will continue playing lights out by the end of the VNL?

I don't think anyone here thinks that Boskovic isn't in the same tier as Zhu and Egonu, but I also don't think that she gets the same volume of balls as either Zhu got in the Rio cycle, or Egonu gets this cycle.
In part, this is because the latter two teams didn't have a decent 2nd pin hitter whereas Serbia always had Mihajlovic but she's been bad recently.

Hancock gets signed by the best European clubs and has the most success with her European teams. I watched next to zero Italian or Turkish volleyball this season, but I find it hard to believe that those owners consistently get it wrong with their signings and Hancock is just lucky to win. I agree with your point. And Novara had a great season overall: Final of Italian League, Final of Italian Cup and Final 4 of Champions League. They only lost against Conegliano, that hasn't (literally)lost a game since Egonu joined. And Hancock had Smarzek as opposite, who averaged 10 points per games at best but still found ways to win. She uses very well the middles. Micha deserves to be in the VNL big roster, even if I don't think she will be selected for the Olympics, coach Kiraly doesn't like her for some reasons. |
