Gabi is better. Rasic,Koroleva,Yan ni, Yuan Xinyue, Fetisova, Danesi -- just some I can think of. Middles are pretty even these days. Gabi is better at what? Getting blocked? they are both good at getting blocked lmao

Eda and Gunes are underrated middles imo. Both compliment each other well for Turkey.

Just a blind venture out there in terms of middles: Eda (Turkey), Yuan (China), Folie (Italy)*, Zehra (Turkey), Rasic (Serbia), Chi*?
*Folie when healthy is hella fast, like really impressive. And when the connection is there, Chi is really hard to stop and her blocking continues to improve. There's a reason Guidetti wanted her at Vakifbank.

I don’t think Rasic is top. I don’t even think she’s top 3 anymore.. Ogbogu may be top 3, one of the Chinese middles, Italy has a few, we don’t know how foluke will look. really? I’m not super familiar with foreign middles but Rasic is SO good. I’d be surprised if she wasn’t even top 3. She didn't play like at all with Vakifbank this season, so she's probably still a little out of form even in the CEV final. She's definitely regressed since 2016 or even since 2018, but she's still very dangerous. As others have said, I really like what Eda and Zehra do for Turkey (Zehra is still only 21!) and Yuan Xinyue is really really good (helps to be 6'7"). Idk how Foluke will look especially with Carlini and Poulter's setting and I like what Chi has been doing, Italy has really elite middles in Folie and Danesi...just really even all-around.

Gabi and Krob are probably close enough that there's not a wrong answer, but I'd take Krob.

It makes sense that USA, Brazil and Dominicana always bring their best to the VNL. With the level of competition in NORCECA and CSV being low to nonexistent, this is their only time to get in good international reps.
We will likely continue to see less competitive VNL’s in the odd years due to the European Championships and more competitive editions in the even ones before the World Championships and (typically) Olympic Games.
Covid just threw everything off.
Still, European teams and China are doing what they must, but it’s huge gamble. Healthy players who haven’t played against top competition > worn out ones who aren’t in good shape heading into an Olympics I suppose.
Will it pay off though?

For China Yuan is the freakishly tall, but with fluid mobility screaming middle waiting to attack. Yan Ni is the silent middle with strong arms and better block judgement.

How does Italy not have a better setter than Malinov ? De Genarro is a better setter lmao Imo, Orro is better but she isn’t as flashy, Like Malinov makes these sets where I’m like “damn that’s why she’s starting” and then there’s other plays where I’m like “damn why is she on the floor”. Orro is just more consistent to my eye. I wonder if Mazzanti will give Orro the chance or if he sticks with Malinov as the consistent starter.

I suspect Orro will finally get the starting job this summer. She had some injuries early in the quad that set back her taking that spot, but she was really good this season.
This board also doesn't appreciate how young these setters are. Orro is younger than any USA setter, Malinov only just turned 25 a few months ago.

I think Orro is comparable in age/experience to Poulter, Carlini to Malinov.
I don't think we as the board appreciate it, because the US doesn't really do youth (but that seems to be improving) I think its easy to assume pro=older. I think we all kinda forget Haak would be like a junior right now. Egonu is six months younger than Lexi Sun.

The Italians are both a full year younger than the ones you are comparing them to. Yet it's the Americans we talk about as younger.
