UNC wins set 1 25-16
Passing wasn’t terrible but only had one three pass the whole set and the setters ran a bit but the hitters converted. Nia Parker-Robinson is so good. A boomer for sure. She is the go-to on this team and will be an all-conference player. Maybrey looked good on her chances with some loud swings. Skyy and Kaya were still good in the middle. Zinger added a couple kills and a block but Peck got dug up on all of her attempts (7-10 attempts).
Maybrey’s top spin serve is good!

Set 2 is a 5-2 with Neelon and Reynolds. Diaz DS-ing for Zinger and Phegley is in the middle with Merkler.
NPR and Shaffmaster getting aced a bit early this set.

UNC wins set 2 25-15
NPR and Zinger led the offense and Merkler and Shaffmaster added some big points. Shaffmaster seems to have an uncanny understanding on how to control the ball when attacking and serving. It’s really impressive.
Meyerhoeffer DSed for NPR and looked good. She’s the second best passer on the team it looks like right now… maybe third or fourth when adding Austin and Buckner but they haven’t played tonight.
NPR, I think, has gotten a touch on every single ball attempted when blocking… Zinger has been formidable blocking today, too. She looks better than last year for sure. Reynolds didn’t get a single touch on a block playing front row, but didn’t have a ton of opportunity either. Shannon was a serving specialist.

Set 3 has Parker and Maybrey in the OH. Skyy and Niki in the middle. 6-2 with Neelon and Archer; Zinger and Boone on the RS.
Parker passed two great balls and had one hitting error and Susan got up and was very sharp and short with her (she hadn’t done that at all this match but immediate on her)… her teammates tried to rally her but shanked the next pass. She rebounded and has had some good defense in the back row.

That is so typical Susan - way to go!! Such a positive influence that makes the athletes work hard for her

UNC wins 25-17, kind of ugly on both sides. Lots of errors.
Meyerhoeffer played back row for Shaffmaster and looked good. Austin wasn’t terminal but made smart swings… and honestly didn’t get many decent sets from Archer.
This team is at its best when Neelon is running the show thus far. This was the first set the NPR didn’t play and her absence was noticed from a morale and energy standpoint.
Playing a fourth set…

Set 4 is a 6-2 with Archer and Reynolds (back row)
NPR and Shaffmaster as the OH, Phegley and Niki in the middle, and Peck and Parker on the right.
Not off to a great start. Not passing well at all and they are focusing on NPR. When we do get a good pass, it’s set anyone but NPR and nobody can put the ball down. Down 12-5.

Eye test, there was a lot to be happy about and some concerning issues.
In the 3 sets that stats were kept, UNC was very offensively distributed. Nia had 7, and there were 4 other players with 6 kills (Zinger, Shaffmaster, Merkler, and Howard) to hit .375. The setting of Neelon is making a huge difference. We do have Nia in tough situations, but we are not a one trick pony team. Shaffmaster is going to be a stud by ACC time. Howard and Merkler both can hammer from the middle and Zinger surprisingly looked good Sunday and was a tremendous blocker.
Blocks: we havent skipped a bet. We look more disciplined. 11 block in 3 sets...almost 4.0 blocks per set...our dig number was 28, so 9 digs per set....but with big blocking, our digs numbers are going to look different.
Passing: we go through phases of really good passing and poor passing. Wurl is solid as is Meyerhoefer....i really think the coaching staff will end up using her to DS for one of our outsides. We also had 6 aces, a lot of time kept HPU OOS, and we were only aced twice. Difference is, while we were OOS some, we have terminators who can put the ball down when the sets are off. This is going to be something they really need to work on.
All in all, key issue will be passing. We are a team with good offensive power and balance and blocking will remain a staple of this program.
