Yep, sorry, I guess usually last names are known better. Expect her to be a big piece this fall.

Will the scrimmage be open to watch in person?

I believe it will be, but not 100% sure. With Paula leaving and Kyle taking over Director of Opps, there has been some changing of the guard and slower release of stuff. But that should improve quickly. Kyle will do well.
Our new volunteer assistant, Phoebe is also adjusting well. Girls seem to really like her.

Looks like everyone is playing today except for Maylen Mitrovich. She’s not bandaged or in a brace, so if it’s an injury, hopefully it’s minor. They are warming up now and the first thing I notice is having a 6-1+ setter. Apart from Carlton, it’s been a while since that’s been the case here.

Set 1:
Blue: 5-1 with Emma Reynolds. OH: Parker Austin, Maybrey Shaffmaster MH: Kaya Merkler, Niki K. RS: Emily Zinger L: Olivia Diaz (Ryan Shannon DS)
White: 6-2 with Meghan Neelon, Anabelle Archer OH: Nia Parker-Robinson, Aziah Bucker, Carly Peck MH: Skyy Howard, Amanda Phegley RS: Erin Boone, Coach L: Karenna Wurl (Marissa Meyerhoeffer, Carson Overbeck DS)

White 25, Blue 16
Nia Parker-Robinson… wow. Has a cannon. Passing was a huge problem apart from Wurll and Meyerhoeffer; Shaffmaster struggled and Blue struggled cause the passing (from everyone) was not good
Neelon is really good so far. Reynolds wasn’t great but hard to tell with the passing issues

White 25, Blue 23
Neelon moved to the Blue team and they ran a “5-2” with Reynolds. Archer ran a 6-2 by herself when they just kept her in the back row. Meyerhoeffer and Shannon switched teams.
Shaffmaster showed some great swings when she could get a good set. And showed some OOS swings, too. The passing helped Blue a bit but too many runs of bad passing. Meyerhoeffer has been pretty decent, has great energy, and good instincts.
Overall, a lot different energy on the floor this year than in the past few for sure! Parker-Robinson, Neelon, and Reynolds are the catalysts for that in my opinion.

Blue 15, White 6
Austin and Peck switched sides so the OHs were Parker-Robinson and Coach (White) and Shaffmaster and Peck (Blue). Reynolds also went to white and ran a “5-2” with Archer and Neelon ran a 5-1 for Blue. Austin played back row in right back when Reynolds set the front row.
Blue won this set… honestly, mainly because our volunteer assistant coach was… really not good. She was the O2 and then they moved Skyy to OH and put her in the middle. Shaffmaster had some great swings but their offense got a lot of free balls and tips.
Buckner didn’t play today at all… but she warmed up. So she might be coming off an injury.

Thanks for the updates - looks like even with 20 girls on the roster we don’t have enough players when there are some that are not playing or injured.

Overall it was not a bad scrimmage. I think the energy is much better this year than in past years and it’s a palpable difference. The transfers were very welcome, especially Nia Parker-Robinson. She can put the damn ball down. And she has a great, infectious positive energy. Our biggest strength will be depth and our biggest weakness is going to be passing. Based on what I saw tonight - and general thoughts - this is what I think would work or be likely: OH: Nia Parker-Robinson and Parker Austin RS: Maybrey Shaffmaster and Skyy Howard MB: Amanda Phegley and Kayla Merkler S (6-2 offense): Meghan Neelon and Emma Reynolds L: Karenna Wurl DS: Aziah Bucker I put Shaffmaster on the right side because, as volleyheels10 has said, her passing is not where it would need to be and she’d be exploited often this season. She’d definitely get some swings on both pins and she can terminate out of system. Parker-Robinson’s passing was “passable.” I also put Skyy on the RS because I think she’s the most versatile. She took swings from the OH today but primarily played middle since we were fielding two teams. There is some good versatility and depth this year. I would give the edge as DS to Buckner because if we start running out of subs, she’d be more than serviceable filling in front row if needed, as well as being an option out of the back row. She swung really well in warmups... Wurl is the clear libero and it’s not close. Diaz is next best at defense but I think Marissa Meyerhoefer is the next best passer of the DSs behind Wurl. Overbeck looks to be a serving specialist this year and Ryan is not where she needs to be passing to get significant court time. Meghan Neelon is the best setter on the team right now and it feels pretty obvious. I’d almost say it’d be a toss up between expectations for Mitrovich’s second season and Reynolds, but Reynolds versatility to stay in front row if subs become a problem is too good to pass up. Reynolds did not really impress me much, honestly, but she’s solid. Having two additional setters for depth is going to be good. Archer is not bad, but I think she’s likely the weakest of the group. Middles... in order it’s Skyy, and a toss-up between Phegley and Merkler because they offer such different skills. I think Skyy is the most versatile and was destroying balls from the pin in her opportunities today, so I think she might be best to start at RS and change if needed. Zinger would likely be the first option off the bench if needed on the right, but more because she’s a lefty. I think Carly would be a choice for a first option on either pin if we need to as well. Just my thoughts after today... they ran a lot of 5-2 and not a 6-2 with Reynolds... so not sure if that’s really in their plan or not. I’m not a huge fan of a 5-2, personally... but with this coaching staff I almost wouldn’t be surprised if we ran a 6-2, 5-2, and a 5-1 all in the same match a lot...

In the past, the scrimmage was more of Team A (likely starters) and Team B (depth). Tonight, it was just a lot of experimentation. I do think the passing was very off at times, but I am eager to see what things look like against HPU when we actually roll out a starting lineup. The analysis above is pretty spot on.
SKYY Howard and Nia Robinson are absolutely going to be key for us this year. And Parker Austin looks really good. This team looks a year better and the energy reminds me a lot of our 2014 and 2016 teams. Nia and Sky remind me a lot of the McPherson and Neunfeldt feel.
So volleyball: LS: Nia has a cannon. More than Lauren Harrison, and she passes better. She def will be a key attacker IS and OOS. Parker Austin would then be my next LS. She looks much improved after being w Team Canada this summer. She can play defense well and knows when to swing hard vs roll. Buckner is easing in after injury but she would be next up.
MH: Kaya and Skyy. Skyy can hit a fast tempo like no other and Kaya hits the slide masterfully. They just have an extra oomph Phegley doesnt have. Phegley is a good player, but the prior 2 have a very versatile skill set.
RS: Shaffmaster. I really like her and next year she will be a great 6 rotation, but her passing needs work. She rivals Nia for how hard she hits. And she is a freshman. Reminds me a lot of Taylor Treacy. I think in a 6-2 my next RS would be Peck, but this year most likely Zinger.
Defense: Wurl. WURL. WURL. She gets better and reads the game well. Diaz was ok but Merissa was VERY good to be a freshman. She is smart and passes good.
Setting. NEELON. So glad we grabbed her. She has good connections and is confident. Emma doesnt move fast...but is getting more comfortable with the tempo. I would be okay running a 5-2 if she could block well.
Areas of concern: passing, but again, i think it will be much better when we have a starting lineup and put the best on one side.
Strengths: Power on the pins, we actually have terminators! Middles are versatile and effective, Blocking, service game is strong, setting with leadership mentality.
This team has the potential...POTENTIAl to be a surprise in the ACC...
Ready to see how we do against someone else across the net...

I like what I’m hearing. And Robinson is definitely the energy that team desperately needed. Shaff’s passing will get there.
