Good timely podcast. The amount of travel Kelly's done in the last couple months is crazy. Can't remember the town he said, but sounds like he revisited one particular place a couple times....

Feel like I heard Siesta Key a couple of times. That is next to Sarasota, for those who are unfamiliar. Did a quick search of the board here for 'Siesta Key'. Looks like someone named Jordyn Byrd is a recruit from Siesta Key. Whether that is the reason for his visit, I do not know. She is a 2023 RS, which does not exactly strike me as a need with everyone on board and coming in over the next couple of classes. I heard Louisville a couple of times. Vegas and Orlando a few times as well.

Just jumped out at me because it's not a place we typically hear from, so the assumption is there is someone special there. Thanks for the fill-in!

Vegas just hosted GJNC & Orlando hosted AAUs. IIRC there was a big tourney in Louisville recently as well.

Watching Serbia v Poland (U20) right now. Serbia shellacked Poland to start set 1, but Poland got some momentum to the end of the set and kept set 2 close. Orzoł came in on the right during set 3. She hasn't gotten set much, but I'm loving the energy she brings.

Just doesn't look like she trusts it. But, maybe it is one of those cases where I am looking something and see it everywhere. She can still elevate and can still put some steam behind the ball.

UW-Green Bay posted their schedule this morning (last night?). Northern Illinois has not yet.
They have "at Northern Illinois" listed for Thursday Sept 16 and then Wisconsin on the 17th.
So it looks like it will be UWGB in DeKalb for Thursday-Friday, and UW for Friday-Saturday. No 4th team, and no 'double-header' on either/any day. I was hoping there might be a double-header one of the days.

He goes out of his way to make sure that they only play 2 teams per week during the pre-conference because it keeps them from being too beat up going into the Big Ten. He said that is part of what makes it so hard for them to find teams to play them in the pre-conference - many teams want to play 3-4 matches/weekend, so many decline Badgers' tournament invites and uninvite them to their tournaments because the Badgers won't agree to play every team there.

A 4th team would have meant double-headers both days with nobody playing twice on the same day (like the Baylor, TCU Minnesota weekend). Or it could have been Northern Illinois playing twice on Saturday, etc. (like the Texas- High Point-Wisconsin weekend a couple years ago).

From Sheff's comments, it sounds like the problem is finding a 4th team willing to travel for only two matches. He doesn't prefer three match weekends even if they don't have a double header. I can't think of that many in the past. Was K-State the last three match weekend? Maybe Creighton? It probably doesn't help that there was a much shorter timeline to figure a schedule out this year. I'm guessing that's one reason they like pairing up with Minnesota. They don't have to play them. They need to find another B1G team to pair up with for another weekend. Purdue?

(The football team had a Friday night season home opener.)

Italy looks like the best U20 team in world. Just a guess Italy would be top 10 In NCAA's. Possibly better than all BIG Ten teams???
I remember when Wisconsin went over to play in Europe in 2019 the matches with the ITALY U19 team were very competitive.
Julia Orzol (#16) Captain of team Poland played Italy today. She lead her team with 24 points. I thought she was excellent. Poland lost in 4. Match wast tied 1-1, Poland was up 24-21 and could't close out set 3. Poland was blown out in set 4 (emotional let down due to losing set 3) with Orzol stuck in backrow setter gave her several bad sets out of the backrow that she could not take good rips at.
I believe she will start for Wisconsin.
Her backrow attacking is by far the best Wisconsin will have in the Sheffield era.
She will also be the best OOS left side Wisconsin has.
Her jumpserve will be a weapon as well.
She is the best passer Poland has, but not sure it is at level of Gio,Barnes and Boyer.
Italy does serve very tough. Italy has played Poland at least 4 times now (3 friendly matches before the world championships). Italy served at Poland's libero and other OH more than they did at Orzol.

Mania...what is your projected starting lineup?
I am not so sure that the best lineup come December would include both Hart and Loberg. I am sure it'll start that way, and I am not sure if that'll change at all throughout the season. But, if you threw Robinson back to middle with Rettke and had Orzoł on the right side with Loberg/Demps at OH, that might just be the ticket. Or, keep Robinson on the right side, Hart in the middle and Orzoł/Demps at OH.
If Orzoł is in the lineup, I would assume she plays 6. Whether she passes or not...not sure. If she is not in the lineup for whatever reason, I could see a 2019 type of setup with DSs galore. Gio, Reed, Boyer replacing Robinson, Loberg and Demps in the back row. But, that could also take Izzy's serve out of play. I still assume Jardine is too raw to be ready.

In My opinion These are starters for sure: Rettke, Hilley, Barnes, Gio, Boyer, Robinson My best guess is these are the others seriously competing for spots: Loberg, Demps, Orzol, Hart, Smrek (Does Robinson move to the middle if Orzol can play on right???) Do we see Robinson on the Left side?? Possibility. So many potential lineup combinations.

I saw Orzoł's stats after the fact and was waiting for someone to mention it. Poland hits out of the back row a lot with her in the lineup and not much without her. Her comfort with that element of her game does add a dimension that the badgers have not had. However, the real question will be the same as for Loberg -- will her passing be good enough to make the BR attack option a net positive. I have a feeling Loberg was one of the players Sheffield was referring to when he mentioned some never really recovered their form after COVID. It will be interesting to see what happens with her, Demps and Orzoł.
I think it will be hard for Smrek to displace an experienced middle. I remember watching Hart start against Rutgers in 2017, I think, and you could really see what a difference Tionna's experience made in terms of her general court awareness - even though she was struggling offensively with injury at that point in the season. She just knew where to be in almost any situation and the rest of the team was much more comfortable with her in there. Smrek is going to have to bring something special while displaying that kind of court sense as a freshman. That's a big ask. I also think it is very unlikely Sheff moves Robinson to Middle next year. She's a big block on the right, and she probably will be a more efficient RS attacker than anyone else they can find. I think she beats out Orzoł for that position.
I think Boyer, Gio and Barnes could play with Ashburn in the back row, if UW went to passing focused system like they did with Barnes, Clark and Dodge to keep them in system more often. Loberg in back row never convinced me last year and Demps hasn't shown us she can pass well enough yet to play around. However, Orzoł's way into the lineup may be as the best passing L2 who can attack comfortably from the back row. That could change things. Unlikely to me, but maybe she could even DS while providing a hitting option from the BR, ala Kraft.
