Seriously, Jon is one of the best play by play people in volleyball. Simple as. He is a pillar in the UW vball community, which isn't small.
What is behind this? Are we going to get student announcers this year? What is supposed to happen to badger broadcasts?

Yeah, Badger volleyball fans should say something en masse. Who, exactly, is supposed to replace Jon Arias with 3 weeks to go before the season starts?
I'll bet their answer is "No one." Back to square one...why have volleyball when you can talk about football 24-7, right?

So, with the preface that I am not a talk radio guy, sports or politics or anything else, but I do listen to Badger games in multiple sports on the radio... after doing some googling ... Arias had a daily (?) sports talk show on "1070 The Game" (WTSO 1070 AM), and it is that show that he was fired from (?). WTSO is a "sister station" to longtime Madison Badger station WIBA, both owned by iHeartRadio. But if you listen to Badger games - Matt LePay doing football or basketball - etc., he says that the broadcasts are a production of "Learfield IMG College" and i think he says that the announcers are employed by Learfield with the approval of the university. So when Arias is doing his daily show, he's working for iHeartRadio and WTSO, but when he's doing a VB broadcast on WTSO (or on WIBA) he's employed by Learfield? Learfield is a national - or at least regional in the Midwest - corporation that produces broadcasts for many schools. And there is a division (?) of Learfield that deals specifically with Univ of Wisconsin called "Badger Sports Properties". And so it is Badger Sports properties that hires the announcers for Badger radio games? So would Learfield-Badger Sports Properties be able to tell WTSO that, like it or not, Arias is the broadcaster for the VB games they are going to carry, even if they fired Arias from his "day job"? Would Arias be OK with that? Without the "day job", is that enough to keep Arias around, or does he have to go elsewhere to another 'day job' to make a living? My guess as the answer to "To whom" is Badger Sports properties. But that is clear as mud. www.learfield.com/partner/wisconsin-badgers/(Maybe Arias can get a gig doing VB on BTN instead of the people they have now.)

I am guessing Jon will be looking for other opportunities. That subtweet seems to suggest that there is at least a little bit of uncertainty as to whether he will be on VB and WBB. Radio seems to be a fickle business. I have known of guys who have been on just about every station in a market and a lot of them bounce around. Same for TV.
The risk regarding him being around to call volleyball is that he could get a job in another market. He is from Minnesota, I believe. At the very least he is a Vikings fan. Even if he had a lifetime of roots in Madison, it probably wouldn't take much for him to depart.

In some other tweets he stated that he was told he was still doing Vball and Womens BBall. So that much is certain. Don't know about the rest.

So how about a letter or two to Learfield to tell them Jon Arias needs to continue doing Badger Women's Volleyball - he has knowledge, talent and a loyal following.

But, being the voice of UW Volleyball is probably not going to be his primary job. UW Volleyball would seem like more of a moonlighting position to me. So, he'd need to get a new radio or TV job, or something, in order to continue to do it long-term. That could bring into play the possibility of him moving on from it. But, I also know next to nothing about radio or sports broadcasting.

Best of luck to Jon. I hope he finds another job in Madison or MKE, but I better get prepared that this could be his last year doing the Badger call.
