Northwestern has published its 2021 roster, and it confirms that Wang and Whalen are departing. All Wildcats are now accounted for. Just saw Dodson is listed as a redshirt freshman. Guess she is taking her COVID year. It will be interesting to see how things unfold the next three-four years across the league and the country since everybody gets an extra year for COVID if they want it and also can have a normal redshirt.

The WCC had a bunch of schedule releases today, and there's some pertinent things:
- Purdue is hosting a non-conference tournament to open the season, and Loyola Marymount is one of the teams going to Holloway Gym. I don't think we know the other two teams yet.
- The BYU Invitational features a group of Utah teams: BYU, Weber State, Dixie State, and...Michigan State? September 3rd and 4th.
Other:
- I'm not aware of a single inkling of who Rutgers might play in non-conference.

I just saw Northwestern’s non-conference schedule. I’m guessing nobody in the league has an easier one. Maryland's will be easier. And probably Rutgers. The slate is in for Rutgers: vs USF @ FGCU vs UMBC vs CCSU @ UConn vs Lafayette Brown NC State NJIT @ Clemson vs ETSU vs UNC Asheville

I think Rutgers at 11 seems a good shout. They have improved year on year and made a big step up last year, albeit in the midst of a lot of turbulence. I might even put them at 10. Michigan State depended so heavily on Franklin last year. They looked a mess after she went down. Who knows what Northwestern will look like after last year's events.

This is the first year since Nebraska entered the conference that there is a clear drop in the strength of the conference as a hole. The top 4 teams are still elite and the next 4 could beat anyone in the country on a given night, and all 8 of these teams will be better this fall than they were in the spring, mostly because they all added recruits and transfers that make them better but also because all eight will get to play a full schedule without weeks upon weeks of delays and pauses. I would expect the national champion to come from the B1G.
The problem with the B1G this fall is that the bottom six teams are just not ready to compete with the top eight teams. Rutgers and Maryland seem to be drawing praise for improving but I don’t believe that is true, mostly they have improved coaching, but their players as a whole are no more talented than they were 5 years ago. They certainly are not gaining on the top 8 teams. And their best players continue to transfer. Rutgers and Maryland appear improved because Northwestern, Michigan State, Iowa and Indiana are regressing so quickly.
Davis appeared to have Northwestern on the upswing but the implosion in the spring was never made public nor are solutions to the problems. Michigan State has been sliding back recruiting class by recruiting class for several years to the point that it’s a toss up as to whether they are better than Rutgers or Maryland. Indiana lost their best freshman to the portal and I’ve never understood the allure of the carnival barker Aird. Iowa is a mess. Indiana and Iowa have no good reasons for being so lacking. They have administrative backing and good facilities. I’ve always thought Wilkinson was a good venue and the new facility at Iowa is much better than the cavernous Carver-Hawkeye. B1G states are bursting with elite level volleyball players and Iowa and Indiana are sitting right in the middle of this talent. Should be an exciting year, we’ll see how it goes.

This season, their best player transfers to Penn State. How could you pick them above the Hoosiers and above Iowa?

If they can pass half decently they should stave off last place.

The USA thanks the B1G for their Volleyball talent.
Eight of the twelve gold medalist have B1G roots.
Note: I gave Jordan Larson honorary B1G cred because her former Huskers are now members.
