It can do both. In 2019, Cincinnati's setter led the country in assists per set because she had Jordan Thompson on her team, not because she was actually good at setting (I watched enough of the Bearcats to know this was primarily because of Thompson). I do agree with you about the frustration with volleyball stats (judging liberos by digs/set is also problematic, among others). I wish the better stats on VolleyMetrics were publicly available. Amen! I think it would really help people have a much better understanding of the sport too. Especially liberos, people would have a better idea of who is actually pretty solid. People’s reputations for best libero may transition to “fun to watch defensively” if better stats were around to paint a better picture VolleyMetrics would help people judge every position better... EXCEPT for setter, that's still a lost cause.

Typed a long response to this, but let it sit too long, and got logged out. tl;dr: I agree, and have no idea what a better metric would look like, cuz even set location isn't a good metric since setters like Gabriel often set the ball too tight on purpose because she has Eggleston and Fields who can just jump up, and abuse the block, and Fields absolutely crushed a few of those sets against Kentucky but then again Gabriel also set the ball completely over the net to the other side twice so it's a trade off thing but yes when Sedwick sets the ball too tight it's basically a death sentence ok! Twice? When...?

I think the out of system bump set Ahh - so I guess Gabriel was the first setter in history to bump set an out of system ball across the plane of the net. Crazy!

VolleyMetrics would help people judge every position better... EXCEPT for setter, that's still a lost cause. Coded game film. How accurate are NCAA stats relative to VolleyMetrics?

How accurate are NCAA stats relative to VolleyMetrics? VM is probably slightly less accurate but they are tracking much, much more.

someone start a new stat-analysis thread and leave this one for rumor and tea. I keep seeing new posts and wasting my time checking for news.

I post about 5% of what I 'know' and I'm wrong about 50% of the time. That said, this one is surprising. I was told by someone in the program 2 weeks ago she was 100% gone. Good for her, she's a great player and a better kid. Hope she crushes it in the fall. What?

He probably accidentally replied to your comment
