No reason NOT to go undefeated in non-conf. So if we win both home conf matches vs csun and ucsb that would makes us 4-0. split on the road would make us 7-3. 24-3 with a suspect non-conf rpi/sos. Big West tournament is at home though so it might not actually matter in the end. Losing Gasman, Cowell, Gage, and Rado plus facing an experienced and talented Loyola team right out of the gate could very easily lead to a non-conference loss or two, even at home. There are certainly a lot of easier teams on the schedule but this is not even close to the team that won the national championship last year. This year there are a lot of guys, however talented or highly recruited, that will need to prove themselves and build chemistry in actual games which will take time.

Even with a Luke Denton-less team and possibly a sold out crowd to cheer on the bows and to celebrate their national championship win???

This is exactly how you would want to schedule a team with so many young question marks. Coaching 101 to focus on your team gelling and gaining confidence.
You can schedule tougher as the team matures in future seasons but I don’t understand why this is so difficult for people to comprehend.
The schedule isn’t bad, it’s just not UCLA, BYU, Pepp, etc and that’s FINE. UH plays in the Big West, the most competitive conference for men’s volleyball.
If there’s anything people want to be up at arms about, let it be towards expanding the NCAA tournament with more teams. THATS something worth whining about so that 2-3+ teams in a conference have the opportunity to compete in the end of the year tournament.
I forget what school it was that got into the tournament the year Hawaii didn’t get in, even though everyone knew Hawaii was better than them. Rather than being upset or denigrating teams, what can be done so ALL top tier teams within their conference make it in

I hear you on that. I took it this way, if you’re talking about Long Island and Lincoln Memorial, it’s more than likely each school wanted to get the most out of volleyball and that big trip to Hawaii. Sometimes you gotta think approval by Athletic Departments have to play some parts here. Who knows where we are in what schools are allowing as far as state to state travel and Hawaii is only barely opening up. Plus it just so happens we are in a year where several UH players who have been with the program for about a year and have barely been sniffing the court, have opportunities to get to play, at home, and show what they can do. I think that’s better for the development of this new crop of players who you can trust in 1-2 games in a 3 game series vs just that starting lineup we saw in the fall/winter scrimmage facing say a UCLA, GCU, Pepp, that all will have their lineups set from last season. Also looks like only 2 “break” weekends, otherwise there’s a decent amount of weekend back to back play. My only issue is that without as many “big name” schools in the pre season, how likely is it for OCC to pick up a lot of games every home weekend. It would be good for LIU and Memorial though, visibility on television is a good boost to any program. Good exposure as well to the Hawaiian prep ballers that don’t make it to UH but can impact these mid major programs (Keau Thompson > Ball State)

Which would make sense why we couldn't schedule some of these "bigger" teams.

the schedule might actually be decent for RPI. and unfortunately/realistically, the use of RPI has drifted over to men's volleyball (where it's regional limitations is compounded by the smaller sampling size in the men's game). but of course, it is what it is.
the growth of the men's game has been predominantly out in the east and midwest. keep an eye on it -- as more teams crop up there, it will improve the RPI prospects for those teams over time ... much in the way it has impacted the women's side.
loyola chicago, lewis, ball st ... and even lincoln memorial should all have winning records that will help hawaii's RPI. those teams, at first, may not pass the "eye" test for toughness. but the midwest teams aren't cupcakes either. let's not forget that teams like loyola chicago and ohio st (although they're not on hawaii's schedule this year) went on a run of national championships just a few short years ago. 4 straight between those 2 mentioned programs.
i agree though, i would have liked to see hawaii book at least 1 other mpsf team in the nonconference part of their schedule, other than a stanford program that was cut at one point, and is now likely rebuilding after being brought back from the brink ... (granted, stanford is part of that early season tournament in texas, so hawaii had no say in the scheduling.)
i kinda like that hawaii won't see beach, ucsb and irvine until april. that will help this young/rebuilding hawaii team to get settled ...

Even with the schedule the way it is, we still host the Big West Tournament at home this season. So Hawaii has more than enough chance to make it into the NCAA's.

Interesting points from various players, but I think Wade and company has got it down. I saw their exhibition matches in Vanguard, and I was in awe. I honestly don't know how coaches would narrow down the line up.
The "sophomores" (I think they're seniors now, academically, no?) has had experience against the Worsley and Thelle line-up - runner-up team and a national champion team. They will be key.
I think this year is a transition year with high expectations. The team has bonded and they look to be very great friends off the court. It's something nice to see and indicator of team chemistry.
Just looking at the younger players - we're going to have height - 6'8" setter + 6'9" hitters... it's going to be a new era after this season.

Or an incoming freshman?

He could do a Gage and not use his last eligibility and graduate already. Thelle is a tall setter and a lot of pro league teams would want him.
