As always, I think there is too much recency bias and too much assuming any one match (or several matches in a row) is indicative of that mythical beast called "team form". Individual players can have good and bad forms, but teams as a whole? Even if such a thing exists, it plays a far smaller role in team sports at the highest level than the mental state of players, on which leg they got up that morning (metaphorically speaking, of course  ), how much and what kind of pressure they are under etc. As for Russia, I think the case is simple: they felt fully free after being disregarded this whole quad and starting badly in the tournament to just swing for it thinking they've got nothing to lose. Goncha suddenly turned back the clock to 2015; they've got several young players who don't feel the weight of failures of recent years weighing as heavily on them as on some older players. But now they've won against 2 best ranked teams in the world, you'll see their arms and legs stiffening, all right. Now, they WILL have something to lose. We'll see how they deal with that. I also get that you Americans are not used to defeats(especially not in group stages), and are thus prone to thinking that anyone who beats you must be the best thing since sliced bread. It could be just that your players had a bad day and opponents had a great day where everything worked for them. It could just be that, 48 hours later, you would beat them just as easily as they did you. That’s a reasonable and rational view. Unfortunately, you are the wrong site for that. oh please. Yes volleytalk gets dramatic and messy sometimes but it is still a site with lots of knowledgeable and credible posters expressing in depth thoughts and opinions on high level volleyball. People act like this site has no idea what they are talking about and that every poster is psycho |

That’s a reasonable and rational view. Unfortunately, you are the wrong site for that. oh please. Yes volleytalk gets dramatic and messy sometimes it is still a site with lots of knowledgeable and credible posters expressing in depth thoughts and opinions on high level volleyball. People act like this site has no idea what they are talking about and that every poster is psycho right? There’s a ton of posters who have been exposed to high level training, have played past high school/recreationally, or have gotten into coaching. Like yeah there’s some that haven’t and there are some posters who are flat out nuts. But on average I’d say people have a good idea what they’re talking about |

I’m still hopeful the US women can turn things around after this rough defeat to Russia. US must out serve and pass their opponents. That’s pretty much their whole identity. So far this tournament they’ve been serving horrible except for JT and possible Washington.
I think Turkey and Russia are hot right now but they’ll likely cool off. Baladin is playing really well for Turkey but she can struggle. Gonchorova and Voronkova are playing amazing. I really can’t picture Voronkova especially keeping this up thru the medal rounds. Federoseva i’d be legit scared of tho.
Brazil seems in best form but will be interesting to see if they can keep this up. Especially with Roberta setting. This doesn’t feel like a team that can sweep thru the gold medal match. This tournament is wide open.

This tournament is wide open. It definitely feels like there is more parity among the top 6-7 teams here than in the past. I personally think that any one of Brazil, Serbia, Turkey, Russia, Italy and the USA could take the crown. |

The quarter final times for the men are as follows:
7PM, 11PM, 3AM and 7:30AM CST.
I expect the women's to be the same.
I hope the USA doesn't get the the 3AM one. Oof.
