Likely Jenny's farewell campaign (if it happens)
Likely selections so far:
S: Ding Xia/Yao Di OH: Zhu Ting/Zhang Changning/Li Yingying MB: Yuan Xinyue/Yan Ni OP: Gong Xiangyu L: Wang Mengjie
Need at least one backup middle for sure -- Wang Yuanyuan who served an airball or Yang Hanyu who served into Li Yao's head?
Two more left -- will that be two extra hitters or one extra hitter and one extra libero? Considering Wang Mengjie is the weakness in the starters I wouldn't be opposed to bringing an extra libero. Leaving one more pin hitter -- I don't think it matters who we bring tbh.
Made this thread to avoid intruding on other teams' threads.

After today's vnl match looks like Liu Yanhan is priority consideration for opposite, since she came in twice for the double sub.

I feel like her arm swing is just too good to leave off the roster. We basically just don't know who the 3rd MB and 2nd Opp will be correct? The rest are fairly obvious yeah?

I think her attack is better than Li Yao, in any case the 2nd opp would be a front-row sub so reception shouldn't count for as much. I prefer her to Li Yao (the latter is too inexperienced)
We also don't know if Jenny takes a 4th outside (almost certainly Liu Xiaotong) or a 2nd libero (Lin Li) The remaining 9 are obvious

It's quite possible that Lang Ping takes both Wang Mengjie and Lin Li to Tokyo. Lin Li has the advantage in better consistency and experience, but she is ageing and there are questions whether she still has the stamina to perform at the top-level. Wang Mengjie, when she does well, she can be one of the best libero in the world, but there are times when she is less consistent and can make mistakes. So it would make sense to bring both along. If Lin is running out of gas, Wang can take her place. Or if Wang is having a bad day for whatever reason, Lin can take over.

Pretty sure Wang Yuanyuan locked up the 3rd middle after today. how would you compare China 2021 to China 2016 ? pins: Zhu Ting, Zhang Changning, and Gong Xiangyu are all clearly better in 2021 than 2016. Li Yingying is better than any Chinese pin hitter not named Zhu Ting at Rio.
middles: Yan Ni and Yuan Xinyue are both more experienced as well. Everyone talks about Yan Ni's recurring injuries but they don't seem to have a big effect on her.
setters: Ding Xia is better than she was in 2016, Yao Di is not as good as Wei Qiuyue but she is not too far off considering Wei was injured in 2016.
liberos: Wang Mengjie is not as good as 2016 Lin Li, but not by much.
The bench is not that good though. Jenny, like Karch, likes to use the double-sub but you need a second opposite for that. Neither Liu Yanhan nor Li Yao could compare to Zhang playing opposite at Rio.
Overall the 2021 version of the team is way better. In a direct competition 2021 team wins for sure.
But the same is true for other serious competitors like USA, Serbia, and Italy. I think 2016 was just a weak year/quad in general.

interesting I think that Zhu was better around 2016 and that aside from Italy the top is weaker than 2016 but thanks for the analysis!

I think in terms of hitting alone, Zhu peaked around 2017-19 during her time in Vakifbank. But she's a more complete player in 2021 compared to 2016. And the team better not make her hit 37% of the attacks again.

It helps that China isn't riddle with serious injuries now. That may be due to better training regime and medical care. At Rio both setter Wei Qiuyue and captain Hui Ruoqi had serious injuries (knee problems for Wei and heart condition for Hui). It was quite an achievement for both of them to make it to Rio. Speaking of Hui, she just gave birth to a baby daughter yesterday, congrats to her and her husband as newly minted mother and father:

If Zhu T/Li YY/Gong XY are the starting pins, I think Zhang CN on the double sub could be an interesting option. She's certainly talented enough to play on either pin.
