I see that the archery competition has already started, but NBC's internet app to let me watch it seems to be kind of broken.
Anyway, I shot archery for about 15 years or so, and some other members of my family for much longer. My sister met her husband through archery.
It's interesting watching the Olympic archery because it's so unlike hunting archery. For one thing, no compound bows. And the ranges you shoot at are very long (in order to be difficult), while for hunting archery the ethics of not wounding animals you don't kill means that we are encouraged to never take such long shots.
And then they add the pressure of a shot clock? (Although, in a sense that is very much like hunting archery, because you have to decide to shoot or not to shoot at the animal's timetable rather than yours.

Another thing about archery is that while physical strength does matter, it doesn't matter so much that, for instance, in a mixed gender team it can't be the woman who is the anchor of the team. From what little I was able to see of Mexico shooting this morning, that was the case there.

Those Koreans are amazing...they are completely dominant and the team they had out there today was (I think) a 20 year old and an 18 year old...pretty impressive distance too....little gust from the gods costly....

Did you see the USA team in Mixed get upset by the team from Indonesia? #15 seed upsetting #2. Knocked them out.
The brutal part was watching the wheels come off for the US in the first two round, fight back to take the next two as the Indonesian took the shoot off.
Amazing match.

Did you see the USA team in Mixed get upset by the team from Indonesia? No, and NBC's replay functionality has been atrocious so far. I'll be watching a replay for about 45 minutes and then it will suddenly drop. And if I try to restart it, I've not found any way to move to where I left off.

Have to say that one of the reasons I love the Olympics is watching the lesser known sports.
About ten years ago, after the Winter Olympics, I'd decided I should be on the curling team.
That said, with the time difference, it's really hard to figure out what's going on. It's hard to figure it out even if you look at ESPN or some NBC sites.

I've realized NBC is intentionally making this difficult in hopes people just tune in for the Primetime block on the main network.

I got really interested in archery after I read Eugen Herrigel's Zen and the Art of Archery many years ago.

mikegarrisonI caught the South Korean women steamroll the ROC on their way to the team gold this morning. The announcers were saying that the sports entity in Korea decided that archery was going to be their thing, so they invested heavily in the recruiting and training. They were actually using the data from USA Archery to design their training. The thing was that the hardest part for any archer was making the Korean Olympic team, because they were going to medal no matter what. You are also not guaranteed a spot even if you are heavily successful, because they will replace you with someone better.

they were going to medal no matter what Spoken like someone who has never shot archery.... Sometimes even the best shooters just have a slight failure of form or concentration. Archery is very unforgiving.

An San won a couple of dramatic one-arrow shoot-offs to win the individual women's archery gold medal, her third of the Olympics and South Korea's fourth overall. Only the men's individual competition is left, and if South Korea wins that won as well, they will have swept the gold medals. They also swept all four gold medals at the 2016 Olympics (the mixed team event is a new addition for the 2020 games). They last failed to win one of the gold medals in 2012.
