if injuries and overtraining are really what took down China, that's really disappointing. It's also why I'm confused at the people who keep saying China should have sent their complete A-team to the VNL for all 5 weeks. Wouldn't that have worn them down even more? I don't see how that makes any positive difference.

if injuries and overtraining are really what took down China, that's really disappointing. China did have a history of over-training and injury-plagued players on their team. That was why the average career duration of their players on the NT was often much shorter than other teams. They simply got worn out faster than other NT players. Even so, that did not prevent them from winning gold in Los Angeles in 1984 and Athens in 2004.
In more recent years however, the training regime in China has improved somewhat. Lang Ping hired foreign trainers who used a more modern scientific-based training to improve player fitness and reduce their injuries. So that overtraining and injury issue should not be as serious for China as before.

Yeah, but literally everyone on the team is strapped/injured in some way...it must just be really unlucky I guess.

Yeah, but literally everyone on the team is strapped/injured in some way...it must just be really unlucky I guess. Their injuries are less than before already. Former setter Wei Qiuyue could barely walk, never mind jump, and had to do knee reconstructive surgery coming into Rio. Hui Ruoqi had a heart condition that could have ended her career before Rio. Both overcame those conditions before Rio began.

And if one is injured or needs to be in recovery, they should do neither. Or limited training.

remember the polish men's team complained that they can't train as much during VNL.
