Katie in the pole vault. That was awesome. She is a great competitor. Crouser in the shot - a great win. Let's see our women's 4x400. Looking good so far. Go USA!

Damian Warner breaks 9000 points as he wins gold in the decathlon. His 9018 points is now the Olympic record. His long jump would've won him a bronze medal.

The 800 is usually a throwaway event at the end of the hep; athletes know what they need to do to stay ahead of competitors and generally execute it. There's just generally very little drama. Gold and silver are already pretty much set, and no one's breaking a record here. BUT Kendall Wiliams is in 3rd, ONE SINGLE POINT ahead of Dutchwoman Oosterwegel 4th place going into the 800. Oosterwegel's PB and SB are both about 3 seconds faster than Williams', so she'll likely try to push the pace and see if Williams can keep up. We could legitimately see 2 exhausted women sprinting down the backstretch against each other for a medal at 8:30 Eastern this morning. I am so stoked for this. That was anti-climactic. Kendall Wiliams just didn't have it in her. The "other" Belgian bravely went out to try to beat both of them, but Oosterwegel did enough. Still waiting for an epic 800/1500 to end the multis some day.

The great Carl Lewis is bringing the heat. Carl Lewis also gave an amazing interview to USA Today about our relay debacle. I implore everyone to read this. He doesn't sugarcoat it at all.

One thing the Aussie (they sound Aussie?) commentators on the world feed from the NBC app mentioned was that it's ridiculous USA is so bad on the relay because we run so many more relays than anyone else. Because of the HS/NCAA team structure, all the meets have relays, which doesn't really exist in the pro world elsewhere outside of major championships.
We should, in theory, be way ahead of everyone else at things like handoffs.

But yeah, they're right about that. One thing Lewis brought up was how ridiculous it was for a 100m specialist like Ronnie Baker running the third leg (i.e. one of the legs on a curve).

BTW if anyone can identify the woman track cycling commentator on that app I'd appreciate it. She has the most deadpan voice ever.

Today I discovered that race walking is the perfect napping content I love track and field, especially at the Olympics, but I refuse to watch race walking. It should be cut in favor of cross country immediately.

Race walking by is the breaststroke of track and field. Axe it.
Also, anyone who’s ever met a race walker regrets it.

Carl Lewis has been doing some live videos with his sister and fellow retired long jumper, Carol Lewis. I watched their first discussion from a couple of days ago, and they had a lot of really interesting things to say about the state of long jumping today (e.g. why the distances aren't what they used to be). https://www.instagram.com/p/CSI1giJjUce

Today I discovered that race walking is the perfect napping content I watched a minute or two of it today and can’t believe this is actually an Olympic “sport”

Watching the 5000 final, I didn’t realize how common it is for the runners to reach out and touch their competitors backs…are they telling them to move out of the way? Or just messing with them?
